Former bank could become community church as fresh plans submitted

The building would be used to host a range of religious and community events

Fresh plans to convert a former bank into a community church have been submitted to Peterborough City Council. An initial proposal for a church at the old Barclays bank at 114-116 High Street, Fletton, was refused by the council in September 2024 over parking and noise concerns.

In December this year, Ernest Moses of Central Trust submitted a fresh application with the same intention to convert the vacant building into a community church and place of worship.

If approved, the building would host a range of religious and community activities, including: worship services, leadership and youth training and mentoring, counselling and family support, as well as community meetings and workshops.

Its facilities would include conference and function rooms, counselling rooms and leadership and training facilities.

Planning documents noted that sound insulation and building improvements would be made to prevent any adverse impacts from singing during worship.

A design and access statement reads: “The proposed development represents a sustainable and community focused reuse of a currently vacant building, transforming it into a vibrant place of worship and community hub that will serve the needs of the local Christian community and the wider Fletton area.”

In terms of parking, the site has an on-site car park which provides a total of 15 spaces, comprising 13 standard bays and two designated accessible bays within the site boundary.

The applicant claimed it had made arrangements with the Italian Community Association and Stanground Academy to use their parking facilities if required.

City council planners will make a decision on the application at a later date.
