One person is dead and another in hospital after a morning fire on the fourth floor of a residential building near Fennell and Upper Kenilworth avenues, Hamilton police said Thursday.

First responders received a 911 call around 5 a.m., police spokesperson Trevor McKenna told CBC News.

Hamilton paramedic Supt. David Thompson told CBC the person paramedics took to hospital is a woman in her 80s who was in “critical condition.” The person who died is a man in his 80s.

Police closed Fennell Avenue E., near the fire but re-opened the road around 7:30 a.m.

McKenna said the fire marshal will investigate the cause of the fire.
