Warmer temperatures will melt snowpacks and result in rising water levels starting Thursday and heading into the weekend and next week.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has issued a new watershed conditions statement warning that temperatures are expected to reach double digits through the weekend.

“Many river systems are still covered with ice which is expected to melt and combined with runoff from this event will increase the potential risk of ice jams and flooding in areas typically prone to flooding,” the flood watch warning says.

“High flows and unstable ice conditions will increase the safety risk around rivers and streams throughout the watershed.”

People are reminded to keep themselves, children and pets away from all ice-covered bodies of water.

The GRCA’s flood watch warning will remain in effect until 12 p.m. on March 13.

Freezing rain warning

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a yellow warning for freezing rain on Thursday, warning that a patchy drizzle or freezing drizzle may persist into Friday morning.

“Rain will change to freezing rain early [Thursday] evening in most areas except immediately along the shore of Lake Ontario where mainly rain with temperatures just above zero is expected,” the yellow warning said.

“Roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery. Icy surfaces could be difficult to detect. There is risk of injury due to slips and falls. Be very careful if walking or driving.”

The weather agency is predicting a high of 13 C for Saturday with rain.

Both Sunday and Monday are expected to be sunny with a high of 9 C on Sunday and a high of 14 C the next day.
