Thomas Tuchel names England’s underperforming stars after club struggles

Thomas Tuchel has questioned the club form of many of his key England players, insisting that only Harry Kane is currently producing the “numbers” he would like.

A rotated side endured a frustrating night in the final third in the draw against Uruguay on Friday night, failing to create many clear chances amid wider concerns over England’s attacking efficacy ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

While blessed with plenty of creative and forward options, Tuchel wonders if the Premier League’s move towards a more defensive and attritional style of football has harmed some of his squad.

Danny Welbeck, not included in Tuchel’s squad, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are the only two Englishmen in double figures across the Premier League campaign, while only Jarrod Bowen and Jack Grealish have reached six assists.

Though the free-scoring Kane has registered 31 times in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, Tuchel admitted that chance creation was a concern ahead of a friendly against Japan that serves as the final fixture before his World Cup squad is named.

“I love my players,” Tuchel insisted. “I really love the quality of our players especially the offensive players but the numbers, the pure numbers of our players on the wing and wherever – except for Harry – are not the outstanding numbers we would normally expect.

“So what is the reason for that? Is it according to the league that the defenders are so strong that it’s difficult and it’s difficult to score and assist.

I would love them to have more numbers, meaning Bukayo [Saka], Noni [Madueke], Ebs [Eberechi Eze], Anthony Gordon, even Cole Palmer, even Morgan Rogers. Not Jude [Bellingham] but Phil Foden. Who is producing, like Harry, these outstanding numbers? Who’s deciding [games]? It’s just a fact and tells me that we have to do it as a team.”

Bellingham is not expected to be risked against Japan as he works his way back to full fitness after a hamstring injury.
