Thomas Tuchel says he will not pick England World Cup squad on pure talent
Thomas Tuchel made the vow at the start of the year that he will not “select just for talent” when he names his World Cup squad.
“It will be very important that we don’t select just for talent, but also for what we need from a player,” he said. “What the social skills are of a player, is he a good team-mate? Can he support if his role is maybe the supporting role? So, this is where the focus is.”
Let’s see how today’s squad announcement reflects that pledge.

Will Thomas Tuchel select one of in-form Man United trio?
Thomas Tuchel has been in charge of England since January 2025 – and is still yet to pick a Manchester United player. Could that change today, with Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw all performing for Michael Carrick’s team?
“For the boys, I’d love to see them picked for this one and obviously picked for the summer,” Carrick said this week.
“I don’t have any influence on that but certainly the boys, the way they’re playing, I think they’ve put themselves right in the conversation and right in the picture and given themselves a chance.”

Good morning and welcome
Thomas Tuchel names his latest England squad this morning ahead of the March friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley
With less than 100 days to go until England’s opening game of the World Cup against Croatia, time is running out for players to make their case for inclusion.
This will be Tuchel’s last chance to work with his group before naming his World Cup squad towards the end of the season, so it is a pivotal moment in their preparations.
Stay tuned for all the build-up.
