Durham Regional Police said at a news conference Wednesday morning that investigators are still working to solve the case, and that there was nothing in the victim’s personal or professional life that would explain why he was targeted.

“Michael was simply leaving work when his life was tragically taken from him,” Det. Sgt. Erik Mamers said.
The money from Durham Regional Crime Stoppers comes nearly two years after the victim’s family also offered a $15,000 reward for the arrest of the suspects.
On the night of March 30, 2023, police said officers were called to a parking lot near King St W. and Park Rd. for a man who had been shot, but he died of his injuries at the scene.

Victim was leaving job
At the time, police said Nigris was leaving his job at Cash Connections pawn shop when he was killed.

Investigators say the male suspect responsible for the shooting fled in a stolen black Ford F150 Raptor. That vehicle was later found on Dundee Ave. in Oshawa.
Police said a second male suspect has ties to the stolen truck, and both of them have been linked to the Lawrence Ave. W. and Keele St. area in Toronto.
“Someone out there knows who is responsible for Michael’s murder or has information that could help us identify those responsible,” Mamers said.
“Michael’s family have been waiting nearly three years for answers and for justice.”

Plea for suspects to turn themselves in
Nigris’ mother also issued a plea for the suspects to turn themselves in.
“I am living, and my family is living, the worst nightmare,” Kerena Randle said. “My soul is irreparably broken.”

Randle said her son, the youngest in her family, was affectionately known as her baby child and is desperately missed. He was the “most generous human being you could ever meet,” she added.
“We do our best to honour Michael’s life by seeking joy, but even in the most joyful moments, there’s profound sadness without him,” she said. “To know him was to love him, to lose him was to lose who we are. We are forever changed. We will never be able to understand their actions.”
She said the fact that there are people out there who know the suspects and who continue to protect them has shattered her faith in humanity.
“You need to come forward,” she said. “The only morally right thing that you can do before the legal and karmic repercussions come your way. We’ve been robbed of the opportunity to grieve. We have no closure.”

Two years ago, police released photos they believe are the suspects in the case.
The first suspect is described as Black and was wearing a black surgical mask, dark hooded sweatshirt with a Puma emblem on the front, black Puma jogging pants, and black Air Force One running shoes.
The second suspect is described as Black with short dreadlock-style hair. He was wearing glasses, a black hooded sweatshirt with “Champion” written in white on the front, black pants, and black running shoes.
Mamers said any information about the suspects, no matter how minor or insignificant, could be the missing piece to solving Nigris’ murder.

He said tipsters can remain anonymous and won’t be required to testify if the information they provide helps identify the suspects.
“No family should have to go through this or wait this long for justice,” Mamers said.
Anyone who can identify these suspects, has video footage, or has any new information about this investigation, is asked to either contact the lead investigator Det. Const. D’Andrea of the Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5405, or Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
