Police have charged both the driver of a truck that hit a 12-year-old cyclist in Waterloo on Tuesday as well as the parents of the child.

The crash happened in the area of University Avenue E. and Woolwich Street, near RIM Park, around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say a Toyota pickup truck collided with the cyclist who was taken to hospital with serious but non‑life‑threatening physical injuries. The driver was not injured.

On Thursday, police said they had charged the 46-year-old driver of the truck under the Highway Safety Act for making an unsafe turn and having an obstructed view.

The parents of the cyclist were issued a Provincial Offence Notice for allowing a person under 16 to ride a bicycle without a proper helmet.
