Starting this Saturday, the Region of Waterloo is hosting seven community drop-off events, allowing residents to recycle their old green bins.

Each event is at a different location in the region and runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until May 2.

Residents can choose from the following drop-off locations:

  • April 11: Waterloo City Hall (Parking lot)
  • April 12: North Dumfries Community Complex (Parking lot)
  • April 18: Breslau Community Centre (Parking lot)
  • April 19: Wellesley Recreation Complex (Parking lot)
  • April 25: Wilmot Recreation Complex (Parking lot)
  • April 26: Cambridge Farmers’ Market (Parking lot)
  • May 2: Activa Sports Complex (Parking lot)

Residents can also drop off bins at both of the region’s waste management sites during their hours of operation, located at 201 Savage Drive, Cambridge and 925 Erb Street, Waterloo.

Olivia Kwok, the waste management director at the Region of Waterloo, is encouraging residents to find alternate uses for their green bins. “We encourage residents to reuse them if possible so you can use it for the yard waste program. Use it for storage if you have no use for it.”

The old green bins were replaced by new green bins last month, following changes to garbage pickup in the region.

If residents can’t attend the events, the region asks them to leave their old green bins at the curb on bulky item collection day with a “garbage please take” sign attached to it, and the bin will be collected. Kwok said the bin will count as part of the limit for bulky item pick-up.

Yard waste collection began last week, and will continue on a bi-weekly basis until the fall.

Residents can find their yard-waste pickup schedule on the region’s website.
