Torrential rains and rapidly rising floodwaters have devastated parts of Oʻahu, leaving neighborhoods submerged, families displaced, and countless animals in danger. Emergency crews, local residents, and animal rescue organizations have been working around the clock to respond to the crisis.

The powerful Kona low storm overwhelmed drainage systems and flooded homes, particularly on the North Shore of O’ahu. Roads became impassable, forcing some residents to evacuate while others were left stranded as floodwaters quickly rose around them.

Amid the destruction, dramatic rescue efforts have unfolded across the island.

According to local rescuers, calls for help began pouring in as floodwaters trapped both people and pets. Volunteers mobilized rapidly, launching boats, paddleboards, and makeshift rescue operations to reach those cut off by rising water.

Animal rescue groups, including Hawaii Pointer Rescue, Rescue Oahu, and Pulelehua Outreach, have been at the forefront of efforts to save stranded animals. Teams reported finding dogs swimming in floodwaters to reach higher ground, cats trapped in homes, and other animals left vulnerable as conditions worsened.

In some cases, rescuers navigated dangerous currents and debris-filled waters to reach animals in need. Many were successfully brought to safety, though officials say the situation remains critical.

After several days of nonstop response, rescue teams are now shifting their focus. While emergency evacuations are still ongoing, efforts are expanding to include a community-needs–based approach, focusing on:

• Pet food and water distribution

• Assessing needs through field outreach and drone support

• Responding directly to requests from pet owners and community members for animals in need

“Thank you so much for following along, all of your support, donations, and community outreach have made all the difference. Operations like this are really only possible with so many different groups and communities coming together to help each other,” stated Rain from Pulelehua Outreach.

Temporary shelters have been established for displaced residents, while animal organizations are working to provide food, veterinary care, and foster placement for rescued pets.

Authorities continue to urge residents to avoid flooded areas, remain alert, and follow evacuation orders as the situation develops.

As Oʻahu begins the long road to recovery, community support remains vital. Donations, foster homes, and volunteers are critically needed to sustain rescue and relief efforts in the days ahead.

How to Help:

Support local rescue organizations on the ground, including Hawaii Pointer Rescue, Rescue Oahu, and Pulelehua Outreach, as they continue lifesaving work for animals impacted by the devastating floods.
