Much of Hamilton’s snow is gone and with temperatures hitting 8 C on Friday, you could be forgiven for thinking winter was over. It’s not, however.

Environment Canada forecasts that in Hamilton and much of southern Ontario, it could feel as cold as -30 C Sunday night and Monday morning.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” Environment Canada said in its warning Sunday afternoon.

The federal weather agency’s warning covers communities from Tillsonburg to Owen Sound in the west, and Kingston and the Kawartha Lakes region in the east.

Hamilton, Halton, issue their own warnings

Hamilton’s medical officer of health issued a cold alert around 4 p.m. Sunday, saying the city notified community agencies who work with vulnerable people and will have recreation centres and libraries available for warming during regular hours.

In a news release, the city said the best place to be during a cold alert is indoors. If you must go out, it said, dress in layers, protect your face and feet, drink warm fluids and avoid strenuous exercise.

Although Burlington and Oakville are not included in Environment Canada’s alert, Halton Region Public Health also issued a warning. Burlington Public Library branches will also be open for warming during regular hours.
