Chicopee in Kitchener will reopen for downhill skiing on Friday after being closed earlier in the week due to rain and mild temperatures.

The ski hill announced on Monday it was planning to close due to the weather forecast and “in an effort to preserve our snow conditions” for March break.

“This decision will allow us to maintain the best possible snow coverage so we can continue to provide quality skiing and snowboarding,” Chicopee said on Facebook.

It was no easy feat, with snow across Waterloo region melting on Monday and Tuesday, and Tuesday’s high was a record-breaking 18.7 C.

But temperatures dropped throughout the week. On Friday, the area was under a special weather statement from Environment and Climate Change Canada warning up to 15 cm of snow could fall during the day.

Flurries were also in the forecast for the next week.

Snowy winter brings ‘best winter ever’ for local skiers

Large amounts of local snow and consistent cold temperatures have boosted operations at Chicopee in Kitchener, Ont., this year. A lot of people have been hitting the slopes this year, CEO Bill Creighton said, telling CBC K-W’s Lauren Kuivenhoven the season got off to a great start and hasn’t stopped.

In an update on its website, Chicopee confirmed the ski hill will be open Friday at 9 a.m. and will aim to be open for March break, which is next week.

There was, however, flooding damage to one of their parking lots and Chicopee is asking people who drive to the ski hill to park in Lot 2.

This has been one of the longest seasons in recent memory for Chicopee, which is a non-profit that’s owned by its members.

For the first time in five years, and thanks to lots of snow, the ski hill opened on schedule in December ahead of the winter break from school.

In February, Chicopee CEO Bill Creighton told CBC K-W it’s been great to see people hitting the slopes and new people trying the sport for the first time.
