Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer were left stunned by a decision during Newcastle’s win at Aston Villa on Saturday, with the former claiming it was one of the worst he has ever seen.
It was a chaotic FA Cup contest at Villa Park, where the home side took the lead through Tammy Abraham on 14 minutes before shooting themselves in the foot.
Goalkeeper Marco Bizot made the wild decision to sprint out of his goal and take out Jacob Murphy on the counter-attack, earning himself a straight red card just before half-time.
Newcastle made the most of the advantage, with two goals from Sandro Tonali and a third from Nick Woltemade giving them a 3-1 win and put them into the hat for the fifth round draw.
Eddie Howe’s men may have thought it wasn’t going to be their day when one decision went against them at 1-0 down, though, which the officials got badly wrong.
Kieran Trippier put in a cross from the right which Villa defender Lucas Digne handballed.
The officials spotted the infringement, but despite the Frenchman standing well inside the penalty area and never leaving it, they gave a free-kick instead of a penalty.

Newcastle actually went on to score from the free-kick, so it did not cost them, but it was a bizarre mistake, which neither Rooney nor Shearer could believe a top level referee would make.
‘I think you can be critical of officials or you can praise them, either way,’ Rooney said on the BBC. ‘But that decision is one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen in football. At no stage was Digne out the penalty box, I think he’s three or four yards inside the penalty box!
‘The linesman is just in front of us and you can clearly see how much he is in the penalty box.

‘The referee looked like he blew and it looked like he was listening to someone in his ear, so I’m assuming the linesman has give that decision and it’s an absolute shocker.’
Shearer feels it is a sign of the times, with referees and their assistants so used to being able to rely on VAR that they are now lost without it.
There was no VAR in the FA Cup tie as it was before the fifth round and the lack of support left the officials looking foolish.
‘There’s perhaps a small excuse for the referee to not see this, and I’m being kind to him, but there is no excuse whatsoever for the assistant, who is 10-15 yards away,’ said Shearer. ‘Nick Greenhalgh, who had an absolute nightmare today. He’s 15 yards away from that, goodness me.

‘If you ever needed any evidence of the damage VAR has done to the referees, I think today is a great example of that. These guys look petrified to make a decision today because they didn’t have a comfort blanket. That’s the damage its done to the officials.
‘For me, they’re actually getting worse. I really don’t think that’s a difficult decision at all, in fact it’s easy. At this standard, that has to be given. There’s no excuse for the assistant not to tell his referee, he’s got that totally wrong.’
It was not the only error of the game as Abraham’s opener was offside and Newcastle boss Howe agrees with Shearer that officials rely too much on technology.

‘I think there’s an argument to say that, because when VAR is there, there’s always a, ‘Well, I won’t give that, but let’s check it’,’ he said.
‘And I think then your decision-making maybe isn’t as sharp as it may normally have to be, so maybe there’s a difference there.
‘I’m always torn on VAR. I said this many times because I still love the emotion, even tonight, when a goal is given and you don’t see a flag or a referee, it’s a goal, and no one’s going to take it away from you.
‘That joy that you get in that moment, I still really love and VAR takes it away. But then on the other side, I was wishing there was VAR on the first goal against us, and probably throughout that game.’

Carmen Electra shared what she believes is the key to lasting romance.
While speaking with Fox News Digital at Steven Tyler’s 7th annual Jam for Janie Grammy Awards Viewing Party, the 53-year-old actress reflected on how to keep the spark alive in relationships.
“You definitely wanna keep the spark alive, but you wanna be with someone that you love being with because that’s definitely what’s gonna keep the spark live anyway, right?” the “Baywatch” alum said.
“So someone that — you just love their spirit, you love who they are as a person, someone that’s not a downer. I like artists, like people that are into art, whatever their art may be, all that good stuff.”
The “Scary Movie” star has previously been involved in a string of high-profile relationships. In the early 1990s, Electra was romantically involved with Prince, who also helped launch her music career.
Prince discovered Electra, who was born Tara Leigh Patrick, in 1991 and signed her to his Paisley Park label.
The late music icon gave her the stage name Carmen Electra and oversaw the release of her self-titled debut album in 1993. The two dated for a brief period before splitting but remained on good terms.

Electra later made headlines in the late 1990s for her whirlwind relationship and brief marriage to NBA star Dennis Rodman.
In 1998, the couple tied the knot in Las Vegas, but he filed for annulment after nine days of marriage. Electra and Rodman later reconciled briefly but finalized their divorce in April 1999.
In the early 2000s, Electra entered her longest and most serious relationship with Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. The two married in 2003 and documented their relationship in the MTV reality show “’Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen + Dave.” However, they separated in July 2006, and their divorce was finalized in February 2007.

After that marriage ended, Electra began a relationship with musician Rob Patterson, and they announced their engagement in April 2008. The two remained engaged for several years but never married and split in October 2012.
Over the years, Electra has been romantically linked to several other public figures, including Tommy Lee, Fred Durst, Colin Farrell, David Spade, Ryan Lochte and Simon Cowell.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Electra revealed she is single but expressed that she is interested in dating in 2026. While speaking with the outlet, Electra shared her dating dealbreaker and described what she is looking for in a potential partner.
“I don’t like liars,” Electra said. “It’s just really nice when you’re with someone [who’s] just really into you. I have had that before. It obviously didn’t last. But once you know what it feels like to really be with someone [who] is so there for you, you can’t undo that feeling. You know, it’s just beautiful.

“[I want] somebody that’s very romantic,” the former “Singled Out” host added. “I remember when I was dating Dave [Navarro], I was so not romantic, and he was teaching me how to be romantic, but now I am.”
During her interview with Fox News Digital, Electra shared her secret to feeling confident in her 50s.
“My confidence, wow, just comes from trying to be the best person I can possibly be,” she said. “I’m a Taurus, so I’m very stubborn, but I love life, I love food, I love people, I love love, and I’m very passionate. And I’ll always be that way. So, that’s never going to stop.”
Last month, Electra, who played lifeguard Lani McKenzie in the hit series “Baywatch” from 1997 to 1998, slipped back into her iconic red swimsuit for a slideshow of photos that she posted on Instagram. The actress posed in the one-piece as she stood on a lifeguard stand while holding a red Rescue Can.
While speaking with Fox News Digital, Electra explained what inspired her to once again don the famous swimwear.

“I just wanted to put this suit on again and shoot,” she said. “2026 is going to be an amazing year, I think, hopefully. And I thought it would be fun. So, I just figured, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s put the suit on and get some photos going.’”
Electra, who reprised her role as Lani in the 2003 television film “Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding,” also addressed whether she would be making an appearance in the upcoming “Baywatch” reboot series, which was announced last September.
“I have not heard anything yet, but I’m definitely open to discussion,” she said.
Electra also teased her upcoming OnlyFans collaboration with another ’90s icon, Denise Richards. Richards joined OnlyFans in June 2022, shortly after daughter Sami Sheen launched her own account on the platform. Electra had debuted her account on the subscription-based platform one month earlier.

At the time, Electra told People that joining OnlyFans was “like a no-brainer.”
“I just felt like, ‘Yeah, I need to do this,’” she said. “I, for once, have this opportunity to be my own boss and have my own creative vision to share with my fans without someone standing over me, telling me, ‘Don’t do this, don’t do that. Cover up this.’”
Last week, Electra reposted a behind-the-scenes clip from her collaboration with Richards, who noted in the video that the two have never previously worked together.
“We’re doing this huge Valentine’s Day collab together, and it’s been really exciting,” Electra told Fox News Digital. “Denise, honestly, is such a sweetheart, and we had a lot of fun together.
“We’re in sexy lingerie, so definitely go to OnlyFans and check us out!”
“I think what has kind of misled children is the belief that if you are not a typical girl, if you like playing with trucks, or boys who like dressing up or that you have same-sex attraction that means that you’re trans and actually it’s not like that but those are all normal variations,” she said.

On Friday, Toronto Police said they were preparing for an estimated 200,000 people to attend the march after 150,000 rallied at Sankofa Square in the downtown core two weeks ago.
But on Saturday police estimated350,000 peopleended up taking part.
“It’s hard to see that our friends and families in Iran are being kept in prison for no reason, being shot in the head for (using) their democratic voice,” Nima Najafi said at Saturday’s rally.

Najafi said he attended the Sankofa Square protest on Feb. 1 and the crowd at the rally in North York was twice as large.
“I had a friend who got shot in the head. He died. He was a pharmacist … a high school friend,” he said. “I had another friend who is imprisoned because he was a doctor treating patients.”

Similar protests also occurred in other major cities including Los Angeles and Munich as part of a Global Day of Action to support the country’s Lion and Sun Revolution.
Many marchers waved pre-1979 red, white and green Iranian flags featuring a golden lion, which was used before 1979’s revolution that saw the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty.
And many also carried images of Pahlavi, as well as photos of people killed in Iran, during the demonstration.
“It is time (U.S. President Donald Trump), (Prime Minister) Mark Carney and other Western leaders recognize Iran’s Lion and Sun revolution and its only leader, (King Reza Pahlavi).”

Arash Karimi said he participated in the Yonge St. protest to show solidarity with unarmed civilians killed in Iran, and he called government crackdowns a “one-sided war against the people.”
“Every Iranian knows someone, relatives or friends, (who have been) killed,” he said.
Protester Amirali Ahzan said he hoped the unrest in Iran leads to political change that guarantees more rights for the people.
As a member of the LGBTQ community, Ahzan said he fled Iran three years ago fearing for his safety.
Homosexuality is a criminal offence in Iran.
“There are so many people like me who have been marginalized and criminalized,” Ahzan said. “I do want to stand up for them.”
Social media was flooded with videos and photos of demonstrators throughout the day that saw Yonge St. closed from Steeles Ave. to Sheppard Ave.

The rally in Munich was attended by more than 200,000 people, German news agency dpa reported.
Frustrated Iranians have protested their government since late December, sparked by an ongoing economic crisis that has sent the country’s currency into freefall.
While protesters were initially focused on Iran’s economy, demonstrators pivoted to calling for an end to Iran’s Islamic Republic, with some supporting the return of the ousted monarchy to power.
Iran’s government, which has cracked down on protests and implemented an internet blackout, said more than 3,000 people have been killed since protests broke out.
MILAN – Halftime arrived, and Canada still had no gold medals at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
No gold by the end of Day 8 on Saturday marked the deepest a Canadian team had gone at a Winter Olympics without reaching the top of the podium since 1988 in Calgary, when the host nation was shut out.
“We would have preferred to see Canada win gold by now, so it’s not exactly where we want to be just in terms of the medal standings, but at the same time, no one’s panicking,” Canadian Olympic Committee chief executive officer David Shoemaker said Saturday.
“There’s a high degree of confidence among this Olympic team. We’ll see our gold medals, they’ll come, and our team’s poised and ready.”
Gold was also hard to come by four years ago in Beijing, where Canada accrued just four among its 26 medals. That was the lowest total since Lillehammer, Norway, in 1994.

The Canadian Olympic Committee and Own The Podium set matching or bettering Beijing’s 26 medals as the target for the 2026 edition.
With three silver and five bronze, Canada ranked 11th in total medals as of Saturday. Norway topped the table with 20 medals and 10 gold ahead of host Italy with 18 medals and six gold. The U.S. ranked third with 17 medals and five gold.
Canadians came agonizingly close to the podium’s top step in the first half of Italy’s Games.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met today with Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu in Munich to discuss opportunities for cooperating economically, strengthening deterrence, and expanding security cooperation. The Secretary and the Foreign Minister reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japan Alliance and their commitment to advancing collaboration in the new Golden Age of the bilateral relationship, reflecting the spirit of President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae’s summit on October 28 in Tokyo.
The Secretary and the Foreign Minister discussed China’s recent coercive economic actions, and Secretary Rubio underscored the United States’ ironclad commitment to Japan. They concurred on the necessity of modernizing bilateral economic and security cooperation to counter non-market economic practices and coercive diplomacy, ensuring that neither nation becomes vulnerable to strategic dependencies.
Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Motegi also reinforced the critical importance of U.S.-Japan-ROK trilateral cooperation in maintaining regional stability and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
