Toronto set for warmest week of the year, rainfall this week

Toronto is heading into what’s expected to be its warmest week of the year so far, with daytime highs soaring well above seasonal norms and a stretch of windy, unsettled weather carrying the city through to the end of the workweek.

According to 680 NewsRadio weather specialist Denise Andreacchi, the week begins on a mild, unsettled note, with Monday bringing scattered morning and early‑afternoon showers, followed by sunny breaks and a risk of thunderstorms as winds from the southwest reach 15 to 30 km/h.

Toronto is expected to reach a high of 21°C, a significant jump from the seasonal average. Monday night will be partly cloudy with a chance of lingering showers and a low near 10°C.

Tuesday continues the warm trend but turns more active, with periods of rain and a risk of storms for much of the day. Between 5 and 10 millimetres of rainfall is possible, as the high will once again reach 21°C before temperatures dip to a mild overnight low of 13°C.

More rain in the forecast midweek

Wednesday brings a slight cooldown but remains mild overall. The city will see a mix of sunny breaks and scattered showers, with lighter southwest winds of 10 to 20 km/h. The daytime high is forecast at 17°C, with a warm low of 14°C heading into the night.

Another warm day is expected on Thursday, though showers return in the afternoon and evening with about 5 mm of rain anticipated. Winds will pick up again from the southwest at 20 to 40 km/h, and the high will reach 19°C before dropping to 10°C overnight.

Friday rounds out the workweek with more warmth under a mix of sun and cloud. Winds shift slightly to the west‑southwest at 10 to 20 km/h, and temperatures climb to a high near 20°C, with another mild low of 10°C heading into the weekend.

While the warmth holds through Saturday, Andreacchi notes that cooler, more seasonal conditions are expected to return next week.

The Toronto-area riding had been held since 2015 by Liberal MP Bill Blair, the former Toronto police chief who served as public safety minister and defence minister under former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Blair resigned earlier this year to serve as Canada’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom.

The Liberals have nominated former Ontario New Democratic Party deputy leader and MPP Doly Begum as their candidate to potentially succeed Blair. Begum resigned from the Ontario NDP after accepting the Liberal nomination.

Close to 9,000 runners faced the rainy spring weather to run the 132th Around the Bay road race this weekend.

The annual race took place this Sunday through the 30 km, 15 km, 10 km and five km routes that ended at Pier 8 in Hamilton.

Sahar Monzavi-Bacon ran the 10 km race for the first time this weekend.

“I’ve got a sore knee, a sore hip and a sore ankle, but my spirits are very high right now,” she told CBC Hamilton after crossing the finish line.

Monzavi-Bacon, 38, did the 10 km race this year as part of a list of “40 things to do before turning 40,” but she’s been running Around the Bay since 2014 to support his father, who was on St. Joseph’s Healthcare — the official charity partner of the race — board of governors. But after being hit by a car in 2017, her motivation shifted a little.

She broke her ribs, pelvis, tore her labrum and later developed blood clots that led to multiple cardiac arrests after hip surgery. She said if it wasn’t for the quick actions of her husband, Ryan Bacon, paramedics and the staff at St. Joe’s, her story would have gone a lot differently.

“I’m extremely fortunate to be here today,” said Monzavi-Bacon after running with her sister, Shabi Monzavi and Bacon.

She said she raised around $6,000 in donations for St. Joe’s. The Around the Bay race raised over $430,000, according to a media release from Around the Bay Road Race and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.

Inclusivity in running

Just a few blocks away from the finish line, members of the the Everybody Crew were cheering on their group members as they took on the challenge of Around the Bay.

“Running can be such an exclusive sport based on what you look like and how you can move through the world,” said Emma Coss, who was cheering and holding sings as runners passed by on Sunday morning.

“I think it’s just really important to show up for each other.”

Everybody Crew is an inclusive running group out of Gage Park that encourages a “diet culture-free,” environment said Josh Tenn-Yuk.

“When we think of running, we think of a certain type of body, and when we’re here in every colour, in every body shape, every mobility, running at whatever pace is good for us … [we] encourage other people that anyone can do it, too,” he said.

Tenn-Yuk was also at James Street N. and Burlington Street with the rest of the crew to support his partner, Riley Wignall, a runner in the race who lost her dad, Doug Wignall, on New Years Eve.

“He was always extremely supportive, so she’s going to be thinking of him every step of the way and probably crying a bit, and I’m going to probably be crying with her as she finishes up,” he told CBC Hamilton.

Tenn-Yuk said wearing a red sweater was a staple in Wignall’s wardrobe, so he decided to wear one as well in his honour.

Runners got to race closer to the waterfront

The fastest male and female runners in the 30 km race were Phil Parrot-Migas from London, Ont., with a time of 1:39:34 and Asia Dwyer from Toronto with a time of 1:54:55.

Parrot-Migas was also the quickest male runner in 2024 and 2025.

The race broke a decades-old tradition this year by taking place in April instead of the usual last week of March, a change made because of the Junos’ visit to the city last month. It also had new start and end locations, taking runners close to the waterfront.

“It really was a race around the bay in the truest sense this year and we heard that the runners really enjoyed the route,” said race director Anna Lewis in a news release.

Coronation Street legend reunites with co-star and you’ll barely recognise him

Ashley Peacock and Simon Barlow have joined forces! (Picture: TikTok/Hicko550)

There’s been a double blast from Coronation Street’s past this weekend!

It’s been 16 years since Steven Arnold’s alter-ego, Ashley Peacock lost his life in the apocalyptic tram crash of 2010.

Alex Bain’s character, Simon Barlow bowed out in far less tragic circumstances, though, when he ditched the cobbles for a job on a yacht with his dad, Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne), in 2024.

Both had amassed huge tenures on the show, with Steven racking up fifteen years as butcher Ashley, while Alex played his role as troubled Simon for sixteen years before heading off for pastures new.

The two took to TikTok, creating a video to promote a fundraising campaign aimed at the facilitation of a church refurbishment in Rotherham.

‘Hello everyone, it’s Alex Bain here, formerly known as Simon Barlow on Coronation Street,’ Alex started the video, before handing over to Steven.

‘I’m Stephen Arnold, best known for playing Aston Peacock on Coronation Street,’ Steven started.

‘We’re just giving a massive shout out to a really, really good mate of mine, Scott Brunt. He’s [worked with] numerous charities all over Rotherham, and his latest project is doing a refurbishment at St Mary’s Church in Greasbrough.

‘Please get your hand in your pocket and support him. He’s doing fantastic work for the area, and it means so much to the community to get this church back where it belongs. All the best, guys. Cheers!’ Steven finished.

‘All the best, guys, I hope it goes really, really well. Get out there, get donating, get supporting,’ Alex followed on.

‘Make sure you support him, you cheeky little monkeys!’ Steven finished with a big smile.

Various other celebrities have supported the effort, with Johnny Nelson, Kash Ali and Peter Fury also recording videos encouraging people to support Scott Brunt in his efforts to refurbish the church.

Ashley, a perennial ‘nice guy’, worked alongside his ‘uncle’ and undisputed soap royalty, Fred ‘I say’ Elliott (John Savident) as a butcher, before he discovered that Fred was, in fact, his dad.

He went on to marry Maxine Heavey (Tracy Shaw), with the two having a son, Joshua, though doubts about his paternity remained with Maxine having had an affair with Matt Ramsden (Stephen Beckett). Ashley raised him as his own, despite a blood test eventually confirming that Matt was indeed the biological father.

Maxine, who definitely should’ve stayed at the party, became the final victim of Richard Hillman (Brian Capron). He bashed her to death with a crowbar, leaving poor Ashley bereft.

Ashley eventually found love again with nanny, Claire Casey (Julia Haworth). They married and had a child, Freddie.

Financial issues plagued the couple, forcing a house swap with the Webster clan, and Claire struggled deeply with post-partum depression, leading Ashley to cheat with Casey Carswell (Zoe Henry), who kidnapped Freddie.

Ashley’s death came as the family planned to move to France. While trapped amid the wreckage of the tram crash, Ashley left Claire a final voicemail, reaffirming his love for her.

Simon had a tumultuous time in Weatherfield as the son of alcoholic Peter after the death of his mum, Lucy Barlow (Katy Carmichael).

After the death of Kal Nazir (Jimi Mistry), Simon began abusing his step-mum, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) in an incredibly dark storyline.

He later got involved in a criminal gang, committing burglaries and muggings, though he eventually testified against the other members.

He later returned to crime, becoming a drug dealer alongside Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan), before turning to alcohol, mirroring his alcoholic dad.

After receiving a drink-driving conviction, Simon began to work to turn his life around, eventually leaving the street to live and work with the also-departed Peter.

Strikes on alleged drug boats kill 5, leave 1 survivor in eastern Pacific: US military

The US military said Sunday that it blew up two boats accused of smuggling drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing a total of five people and leaving one survivor, as the Trump administration pursues its campaign against alleged traffickers in Latin America while preparing a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The attacks on Saturday bring the number of people who have been killed in boat strikes by the US military to at least 168 since the Trump administration began targeting those it calls “narcoterrorists” in early September.

As with most of the military’s statements on the dozens of strikes in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean Sea, US Southern Command said it targeted the alleged drug traffickers along known smuggling routes. The military did not provide evidence that the vessel was ferrying drugs. Videos posted on X showed small boats moving across the water before they each were engulfed in a bright explosion.

US Southern Command stated on X that it notified the US Coast Guard to activate the search-and-rescue system for the survivor. The Coast Guard confirmed it was coordinating the search and said updates would be provided when available.

President Donald Trump has said the US is in “armed conflict” with cartels in Latin America and has justified the attacks as a necessary escalation to stem the flow of drugs into the United States and fatal overdoses claiming American lives.

But his administration has offered little evidence to support its claims of killing “narcoterrorists.”

Critics have questioned the overall legality of the boat strikes as well as their effectiveness, in part because the fentanyl behind many fatal overdoses is typically trafficked to the US over land from Mexico, where it is produced with chemicals imported from China and India.

The boat strikes have continued in Latin America even as the US military has focused on operations in the Middle East, where the US was engaged in a war with Iran for several weeks.

Trump on Sunday said the US Navy would begin a blockade of ships entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz, after US-Iran ceasefire talks in Pakistan ended without an agreement.

Trump wants to weaken Iran’s key leverage in the war after demanding that it reopen the crucial waterway through which 20% of global oil normally passes.

US Central Command said the blockade would involve Iranian ports.

Vicky, Frankie and Charlie are among those in serious danger (Picture: Lime Pictures)

Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Monday’s (April 13) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm.

There were screams galore in Hollyoaks as a number of characters were left terrified for their life amid a devastating crash.

The catastrophic collision came in the dead of night on a remote road just moments after Frankie Osborne (Isabelle Smith) set off for a new adventure in London, having secured a place at a dance school.

The popular character, who has been at the centre of some of the long-running serial’s biggest ever stories, said her goodbyes to her loved ones and set off with brother Charlie Dean (Charlie Behan) and best mate Vicky Grant (Anya Lawrence).

But with little time left until her train, Frankie’s joy turned to panic when she realised that she had left her brand new ballet shoes behind, instructing Charlie to turn around.

On the way home, however, the trio found themselves trailing behind a very large removal van, with new clan the Keanes behind the wheel.

Earlier in the episode, we’d seen newcomers Jonah (Matthew Wolfenden) and Beth (Rebecca Ryan) leave their neighbourhood behind for a fresh start in Hollyoaks with son Caleb (Lewis Walton).

But their excitement was short-lived when they encountered Charlie, who – determined to get Frankie to the station on time – made it clear that he wanted to overtake.

Beth instructed Jonah to pull over and let Charlie go ahead but the patriarch refused out of principle. Caleb, meanwhile, unbuckled his seatbelt to reach for his phone charger, having realised his device was out of battery.

Frankie reckoned that Charlie had plenty of room to overtake but he wasn’t so sure and, as Frankie started beeping the horn, he attempted to take over – with horrific consequences.

After clipping the van, Vicky and Frankie suffered head injuries as the vehicle flew through the air – before landing in the forest nearby.

NYC mayor touts ‘socialist’ wins in first 100 days alongside Bernie Sanders

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked his first 100 days in office Sunday alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist, touting what he described as sweeping achievements driven by government intervention.

Mamdani cited key wins, including securing $1.2 billion for universal child care, advancing plans for five publicly owned grocery stores, pursuing legal action against landlords, and boosting investment in services such as sanitation and infrastructure.

In a reference to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her critique that socialists “eventually run out of other people’s money,” Mamdani defended his administration’s approach.

“I have thought often of the Margaret Thatcher’s quote, the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money,” he said. “If anything, my friends, it seems that you eventually need a socialist to clean up the mess,”

Sanders also praised the mayor’s agenda, calling it an inspiration for strengthening communities.

“This is the first time I was ever introduced by someone who talked proudly about democratic socialism,” Sanders said. “And it feels great.”

Mamdani highlighted additional policy priorities during his first three months in office.

To address rising food costs, he proposed opening five publicly owned, affordable grocery stores — one in each borough — by the end of his first term, a proposal critics say represents a departure from free-market principles. Critics say the plan departs from free-market principles. He added that the first location is expected to open next year.

The mayor also pointed to universal  child care as a major early win, though critics say the program relies on heavy taxation and could disrupt existing private daycare providers. Mamdani noted the initiative was fulfilled by his eighth day in office through a $1.2 billion partnership with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The administration has intensified enforcement in the housing sector, with Mamdani saying it issued more than 195,000 violations against landlords and secured more than $34 million in settlements, judgments , and repairs for tenants.

With murders at record lows, officials said the city has removed more than 1,000 guns from the streets and established its first Office of Community Safety to address gun violence and mental health.

In addition, city workers also have filled more than 102,000 potholes in 100 days and are on track to repave more than 1,000 lane miles of streets by the end of the fiscal year.
