Cambridgeshire village with historic thatched school and traditional pub

House prices in this pretty village have fallen over the past few years

Nestled in the south of Cambridgeshire, there is a pretty little village with a unique landmark that takes ‘quintessential English village’ to a new level. If you have a love for thatched buildings and a classic pub then this village may be the one for you, especially since house prices have fallen over the last few years.

According to Rightmove, the historical sold prices in Barrington over the last year were 24% down on the previous year and 42% down on the 2021 peak of £798,182. Over the last year, house prices in this lovely village have an average price of £462,857.

This in itself may not convince you to take the plunge and make a move. What other factors make Barrington so special?

The village is also home to one of just two remaining thatched schools in the country called Barrington Church of England Primary School. The school opened in 1838 and it had a ‘good’ rating in its previous inspectorate report in 2022.

The headteacher, Mrs Agata Richard, said that they are “very proud of our special building” and that “history and tradition are a large part of what makes our school special”.

Barrington also has a traditional pub named The Royal Oak that overlooks one of the longest village greens in Europe, at 22 acres according to the parish council. It is the last remaining pub in Barrington, and it is clear to see why this one has remained popular.

It has an average of four out of a possible five stars on Tripadvisor from more than 340 reviews with one commenter describing the “unique atmosphere” and another that said it was a “brilliant place for a Sunday roast in a lovely village”.
