Police say there is no indication two recent shootings in northeast Calgary are related to each other or connected to extortion targeting the city’s South Asian community.
Police said they were called to the Peter Lougheed Centre for reports of someone with a gunshot wound at approximately 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
After an investigation, police said they confirmed a man in his twenties was shot in a parking lot at the Genesis Centre after an altercation.
The man is in stable condition, police said. No one has been taken into custody. Police said they are looking for one suspect.
On Wednesday at approximately 5:30 a.m., police said shots were fired at a home in the 200 block of Martindale Boulevard N.E.
The homeowners noticed their window appeared to have a bullet hole, police said. No injuries were reported.
It is not known how many people may have been involved, police said.
“At this point, there’s nothing to indicate that it is extortion-related,” Calgary Police Service Insp. Darren Smith told reporters on Wednesday.
So far this year, there have been 20 reported shootings, with six of those confirmed as extortion-related police said.
In a recent report to the Calgary Police Commission, CPS said there was a total of 54 shootings reported in the city in 2025, a 31-per-cent decrease compared to the previous year. Eight of those were extortion-related, the report said.
Smith said despite last year being a low year for shootings overall, police take all firearms incidents seriously.
“There are many more firearms now which our officers are seizing from vehicles, from stolen vehicles, from different incidents, than there had been maybe a decade ago … which is why we’re very concerned about all these types of shootings that are occurring.”
