Though some research suggests pine scents can help us to relax, context seems to matter: a whiff of our Christmas tree might be more soothing to us than pine-scented loo cleaner, because of how we feel about both.
But according to Michigan State University (MSU), the scent of a common herb, as well as hot tea made from it, has been linked to lowered stress levels, improved memory and alertness, and even better sleep and self-confidence.
It might even make you a better driver, they added.
Peppermint is linked to less stress, improved memory, better driving, and less bloating
In a 2021 study, peppermint tea was found to decrease stress and anxiety levels among university students.
And in more recent research published this year, the smell of peppermint oil decreased pain scores in patients on mechanical ventilation.
A 2023 study, meanwhile, showed that the smell of peppermint was linked to less aggressive driving and “also produced medium-sized effects on some aspects of mood from pre-test levels”.
The International Journal of Neuroscience also found that the aroma of peppermint and peppermint oil seemed to be linked to better memory and increased cognitive processing ability, too.
Think we’re done? Nope: the NHS says that peppermint oil can “relieve stomach cramps, bloating and farting (flatulence)”, too.
It works “by relaxing the muscle in your bowel” which “helps relieve the pain of stomach cramps and eases bloating and farting,” the health service explained.
How can I take peppermint?
It depends on the issue you’re trying to address. The NHS advised if your main concern is bloating, try peppermint oil in capsule form, either prescribed by a doctor or purchased at a pharmacy.
Don’t take it for more than two weeks unless a doctor says so.
For de-stressing, both peppermint tea and peppermint scents have been linked to better results, though only the scent has been linked to better driving as of yet.
Per MSU, “the next time you or a child you know is facing a stressful situation, consider that research says peppermint can help”.
They added: “Peppermint candy, tea or oil can be just what you need to find your focus and ease anxiety.”
