On Saturday, a man was caught on Andrew Reynold’s security camera illegally entering his tugboat, which was docked off Cameron Island.

The man spent nearly 30 hours on board, helping himself to food and even cooking a meal, before vandalizing some of the furniture on board.

Reynolds said the man smashed the wheelhouse and cabin cameras and threw them overboard.

Then he appeared to be smoking something at one point and engaging in bizarre behaviour.

“He was running around the salon area, kicking, karate chopping, doing strange things, climbing on tables,” Reynolds said.

It appears the man left the tugboat on Feb. 1 and attempted to steal some groceries from Thrifty Foods in the Port Place Mall around 2:45 p.m.

A short time later, the same man was seen boarding Reynold’s tugboat and that’s when he barricaded himself in and refused to leave.

The Emergency Response Team used tear gas to eventually end the standoff and the 44-year-old man was arrested around 5:30 p.m.

He was released on Monday, but was spotted back at the same dock not long after.

“I called 911 immediately,” Reynolds said. “Minutes later, he starts walking away.”

He said he is frustrated to learn the man was released from custody.

“He’s out on the streets again, 24 hours later, doing whatever he wants to do.”

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said people are understandably upset.

“I think most people are pretty upset and are looking for why and how this happened and appears to continue to happen across this province far too frequently,” he said.

Marcel Alvin Fontaine, who has no fixed address, is now under a series of release conditions, which include staying 100 metres away from Reynold’s boat.

He is also charged with assaulting three people with a weapon on Dec. 23 and police allege he assaulted or tried to assault staff at Thrifty Foods, stole items and obstructed the attending officer.

Fontaine’s next court appearance is Feb. 10.

John Lewis faces a battle to beat arch rival M&S…so will its spring/summer range tempt fashion-conscious shoppers back? LAURA CRAIK gives her verdict – and the 10 pieces to buy now

Daily Mail journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more

I love John Lewis. You love John Lewis. We all love John Lewis. It’s a national institution which we take so much for granted that we’d only truly miss it if it was gone.

It’s also a bellwether. When everything is right with John Lewis, everything is right with the world.

It’s not, of course, but for a certain type of woman – possibly midlife, possibly a parent, definitely time-pressed – a trip to John Lewis can make life feel more manageable.

The stores are calm and ordered, the customer service is unparalleled and the returns policy is generous and clear. You don’t go to John Lewis for surprises: you have enough of those already. You go for solutions, be they for your family, your kitchen, your garden or your wardrobe.

Every retailer purports to offer ‘wardrobe solutions’, that holy grail of fashion that ensures you can stumble out of bed, reach into your closet and pluck out a deftly chosen outfit that makes you look instantly better.

On the high street, competition has never been fiercer – not least from arch rival Marks & Spencer, whose womenswear has been enjoying rave reviews in recent seasons

Much as we all love John Lewis, in the battle to win over our wardrobes, it has its work cut out.

So there’s a lot riding on the store’s new Spring/Summer collection that was unveiled on Wednesday.

John Lewis faces a battle to beat arch rival M&S…so will its spring/summer range tempt fashion-conscious shoppers back? LAURA CRAIK gives her verdict – and the 10 pieces to buy now

John Lewis’s new Spring/Summer collection that was unveiled on Wednesday, including a white cotton crop top seen here on the model

As for which weapons the 162-year-old retailer is deploying in its bid for British wardrobe space this spring, the answer is is ‘optimism and colour pops’, according to its design director Queralt Ferrer, gesturing at what she calls ‘an army of mannequins’ wearing sprightly spring hues.

‘I’m not a colour person, as you can see,’ Ferrer tells me, who at the launch is mainly wearing black. ‘But you gravitate to colour, especially in summer. We’ve had so many neutral seasons that having this kind of optimism – beautiful colours like red, dusty yellows and pink – brings a little bit of joy into your wardrobe.’

My eye is first drawn to a smart satin jacket, £350, in the same colour of green as Kiera Knightly’s famous slip dress from the 2007 film Atonement.

Emerald green has proved to be a perennially popular dress colour ever since, and this is its outerwear equivalent. It’s a clever idea, and comes with matching trousers, £195.

Both are by Amanda Wakeley, one of 14 new labels joining the retailer’s existing 100-strong womenswear brands on offer for spring. A favourite of the Princess of Wales, Wakeley is no slouch at providing elegant wardrobe solutions, and should prove a popular draw.

Of the other 13 other new brands, it’s unlikely that core customers will have heard of many including Martin Margiela’s cult label MM6; the sleek Australian label St Agni; and Mother, the premium denim brand worn by Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon and the Duchess of Sussex. But this doesn’t matter: what matters is whether they buy.

I’m interested to know the criteria John Lewis uses when making its selection. Is their customer price-sensitive? At what price do they balk? They also stock Barbour, Ralph Lauren and Maxmara, all of which come with fairly hefty price tags, yet Ferrer says they consistently sell well.

‘We bring in brands that we think our customer will relate to,’ says Ferrer, who was M&S’s womenswear design director between 2013 and 2018, then Massimo Dutti, before joining John Lewis in 2022. ‘But we also want to stretch her a little bit.

The market is saturated with options – what becomes increasingly important is the curation. The hope is that she’ll come in for brands she knows and recognises, but will also discover something new.’

One brand customers will certainly have heard of is Topshop, the beleaguered but well-loved label that ruled British women’s wardrobes throughout the late eighties to the mid 2000s. After going bust in 2021, it was bought by e-tailer Asos, where it has languished online ever since. Not any more. Thanks to John Lewis, Topshop will now be available to buy in all 36 of its stores nationwide.

Which is good news for older or more timid customers who like to try before they buy, a particularly useful factor when it comes to the minefield that is buying jeans.

Denim was always one of Topshops’s strengths, and standouts for spring include its well-loved, much-missed Joni and Jamie jeans, as well as a black faux leather jacket, £80.

Amid the 650 womenswear, menswear and childrenswear brands that make up the retailer’s offer for spring, its in-house labels, John Lewis and And/Or, can get a little overlooked.

While rival M&S started selling third-party brands such as Joules, Nobody’s Child and Hobbs in 2021, its own brand very much still dominates the shop floor. This is far less the case at John Lewis – which, on the evidence of the new spring collection, is a shame.

Every retailer purports to offer ¿wardrobe solutions¿, that holy grail of fashion that ensures you can stumble out of bed, reach into your closet and pluck out a deftly chosen outfit that makes you look instantly better - much like this camel co-ord set

Every retailer purports to offer ‘wardrobe solutions’, that holy grail of fashion that ensures you can stumble out of bed, reach into your closet and pluck out a deftly chosen outfit that makes you look instantly better – much like this camel co-ord set

Ferrer describes John Lewis’ eponymous brand as ‘casual but sophisticated’, explaining that the design team focused on offering customers a capsule wardrobe of elevated basics.

The clothes look good, but significantly, they also feel good: a pale pink leather jacket, £299, is pleasingly buttery for the price; a white linen shirt, £109, is reassuringly opaque (never a given with linen), and a pair of wide-leg jeans, £79, feel endearingly comfy.

The design team sources as much fabric as possible from Europe (leather is sourced from Turkey), while most of the manufacturing takes place in Portugal, Spain or France.

At the preview, some of the mannequins are sporting Chanel handbags, like plastic Anna Wintours. These are courtesy of a partnership with pre-loved fashion retailer Sign of the Times, which since 2024 has offered John Lewis customers the chance to pick up a classic Chanel quilt bag alongside their three-pack of knickers – for around half the price of a new one.

Also on offer are pre-loved totes from Gucci, Mulberry and Louis Vuitton. You can see the appeal for skittish customers who might feel too intimidated to buy a second-hand designer handbag on less trusted platforms. At John Lewis, they know they won’t be duped into buying one that’s overpriced or fake.

Beyond selling competitively priced leather, denim and tailoring (three categories that are doing particularly well, apparently), what John Lewis is really selling is trust.

In an oversaturated retail landscape where women can buy whatever they want whenever they want it, John Lewis’s famous ‘never knowingly undersold’ slogan has never felt more important. Trust is hard to earn, and even harder to keep.

While some items in the new spring collection may prove too expensive or challenging (some of the barrel-leg trousers are a bit too barrel-legged for comfort), no retailer can be all things to all people.

What it can be, however, is a trusted source of well-priced, responsibly-manufactured clothes, by brands both familiar and new. The secret sauce lies in the edit.

That every John Lewis store also offers a personal styling service (for which demand at grew by eight per cent last year) also helps its customers select the best edit to suit their busy lives.

‘The biggest compliment a customer could pay us would be that they got what they wanted, and that they love wearing it,’ says Ferrer. ‘We want them to be confident about wearing what they buy from us, and we want them to come back because they trust us. Trust is so important.’

Loyal customers are the dream. With losses across John Lewis and Waitrose nearly tripling in the first half of 2025 to £88m, fans will be hoping that in 2026, John Lewis is starts delivering again on the fashion front. And this collection is certainly a good star.

T20 World Cup: Pakistan PM says ‘we’re with Bangladesh, it’s considered stance to boycott India game’

T20 World Cup: Pakistan PM says ‘we’re with Bangladesh, it’s considered stance to boycott India game’

Calling Pakistan’s boycott of their T20 World Cup match against India an “appropriate decision, the country’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that it was a “considered stance” to support Bangladesh.

Pakistan’s cricket team has been told by the government to skip the February 15 game in Colombo after Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland for refusing to play its games in India on account of “security concerns”.

“We have taken a very clear stand on the T20 World Cup that we won’t play the match against India because there should be no politics on the sports field,” Mr. Sharif stated after a government meeting.

“We have taken a very considered stance, and we should completely stand by Bangladesh, and I think this is a very appropriate decision. We are with Bangladesh,” he added.

A livid ICC has warned the Pakistan Cricket Board of serious consequences if it fails to show up for the high-profile match, which is a money magnet at the big event for sponsors, broadcasters and advertisers.

The world body has hoped that the PCB will “consider the significant and long-term implications for cricket in its own country as this is likely to impact the global cricket ecosystem, which it is itself a member and beneficiary of.”

Editorial | Unfriendly neighbourhood: On the ICC Twenty20 World Cup

Pakistan has reached Colombo for its other preliminary engagements, starting with a game against the Netherlands on Saturday (February 7, 2026).

The country’s cricket board has already made it clear that it supports the government’s position and would go by its advice even if a rematch against India crops up during the knockout stage.

Bangladesh’s refusal to travel to India for its share of matches was after its pacer Mustafizur Rahman was ousted from the IPL on BCCI’s instructions. The Indian Board did not specify the reasons but it came amid increased attacks on Hindus there.

Cats, by nature, are obligate carnivores. This means their bodies are designed to thrive on a diet primarily consisting of animal protein. In the wild, they hunt and consume prey, obtaining all the necessary nutrients from raw meat, organs, and bones. Even after domestication, their nutritional needs remain the same. This is where Viva Raw steps in, offering a biologically appropriate raw diet that mimics what your feline friend would naturally eat.

The Power of Raw: Why Choose Viva Raw for Your Cat?

Viva Raw is a brand that provides high-quality, minimally processed raw cat food. Their recipes are formulated based on the ancestral diet of cats, prioritizing whole animal ingredients. Let’s explore the health advantages that a raw diet, and Viva Raw in particular, offers your cat:

  • Optimal Nutrient Absorption: Raw foods retain essential vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that are often lost during cooking. This translates to better nutrient absorption and utilization by your cat’s body.
  • Improved Digestion: Raw diets are naturally high in moisture and fiber, promoting healthy digestion and reducing the risk of constipation. The absence of fillers and artificial additives also contributes to a gentler digestive process.
  • Enhanced Hydration: Cats are notoriously poor drinkers, and a raw diet’s high moisture content helps keep them hydrated, supporting kidney health and overall well-being.
  • Shinier Coat and Healthier Skin: Raw meat’s abundance of essential fatty acids contributes to a lustrous coat and healthy skin, reducing dryness and irritation.
  • Increased Energy and Vitality: A biologically appropriate diet provides the building blocks for optimal energy levels, leading to a more active and playful cat.
  • Dental Health: Chewing on raw meaty bones (when appropriate and supervised) can help naturally clean teeth and gums, reducing the buildup of plaque and tartar.
  • Reduced Stool Volume and Odor: Cats on a raw diet often produce smaller, less smelly stools due to better nutrient absorption.
  • Supporting Immune System: Whole foods and naturally occurring nutrients strengthen your cat’s immune system.

Transitioning Your Cat to a Raw Diet:

Switching your cat to a raw diet should be done gradually to avoid digestive upset. Here are some tips for a smooth transition:

  • Start Slow: Introduce small amounts of Viva Raw alongside your cat’s current food.
  • Gradual Increase: Gradually increase the proportion of Viva Raw while decreasing the amount of the old food over a period of several days to a week.
  • Monitor Your Cat: Pay close attention to your cat’s stool and appetite during the transition.
  • Patience is Key: Some cats may take longer to adjust to a raw diet than others. Be patient and persistent.
  • Consult Your Veterinarian: If you have any concerns or your cat has any underlying health conditions, consult your veterinarian before making any dietary changes.

Ukraine: Civilians injured, miners killed, in separate Russian attacks

Ukraine: Civilians injured, miners killed, in separate Russian attacks

Matthias Schmale was “appalled” by the attacks in Dnipro, Kharkiv and Kyiv, noting that many more people in several regions – including Dnipro, Odesa and Vinnitsya – are facing power outages.

“Systematic attacks by the Russian Federation Armed Forces on critical infrastructure affect the daily lives of millions and cause life-threatening conditions for the most vulnerable, including older people and children,” he said in a statement posted on social media.

He recalled that international humanitarian law prohibits attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Keeping families warm

In the face of the “incessant attacks” on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the UN children’s agency (UNICEF) is scaling up efforts to help keep critical services running amid freezing temperatures.

Since November, UNICEF has delivered 106 mid- and large-capacity generators across the country to support water utilities and district heating companies.

An additional 149 generators will be released over the coming weeks to further boost operations and strengthen back-up power solutions.

“Across the country, vital services for children and families are strained and parents are struggling to keep their children warm, prepare hot food, and access regular running water,” said Munir Mammadzade, UNICEF Representative to Ukraine.

These generators will help the brave technicians on the ground to keep systems running to keep the heating on, hospitals open and water flowing.”

Miners killed in drone attack

Meanwhile, UN human rights monitors confirmed that a Russian drone attack on Sunday in the Dnipropetrovsk region near the frontline in eastern Ukraine killed and injured coal mine workers commuting home after completing their shift.

The attack occurred in the city of Ternivka, and 12 civilians were killed and 16 wounded, according to local authorities.

“This incident highlights the dangers civilians face when hostilities extend into areas of everyday life, even well beyond the active fighting zone,” said Danielle Bell, Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU).

Deadly explosion

The mine employees were travelling by bus on a regular commuter route through Ternivka, approximately 65 kilometres from the frontline, when multiple Russian drones struck the road near the vehicle over several minutes.

The bus windows were blown out in the explosion, killing and injuring passengers. Other civilians driving nearby, as well as people who rushed to help, were also reportedly among the casualties.

Simply trying to return home

UN rights monitors visited the scene on Monday and interviewed witnesses.  They observed two craters, in front of and behind the destroyed bus, along with remnants of the drones used in the attack.

One of the injured coal miners described climbing out of a bus window after the first explosion.  He heard screams from inside the bus, and then a second explosion shortly afterwards.

He told the UN team that “this is all wrong” adding that “we are ordinary coal mine workers. People were simply returning to their homes, to their families.”

Starmer Mocked Over Speech Calling For ‘Decency’ In Public Life Amid Mandelson Revelations

Keir Starmer will call for decency in public life a day after admitting he made Peter Mandelson the UK’s ambassador to Washington despite knowing about his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

In a major speech on Thursday, the prime minister will say that the people of Britain are “bound by values, by common endeavour and by responsibilities we owe to one another as partners in the project of this great nation”.

“I believe in our way of doing things – that in a world that increasingly preys on weakness, I believe Britain is stronger as a tolerant, decent and respectful country,” Starmer will say.

The speech, in which the PM will hail the government’s £5 billion “Pride in Place” project to rejuvenate deprived communities, comes as he fights for his political survival over the Mandelson scandal.

Labour MPs reacted in fury on Wednesday when Starmer admitted for the first time that he had know about the former peer’s links to Epstein but still made him US ambassador last year.

One told HuffPost UK: “It was like being present at the political death of the prime minister.”

In his speech, the prime minister will say: “I love this country. It is the greatest country in the world.

“The progress and prosperity I’ve seen throughout my life, the journey I’ve been on, personally from a working class background to this, I owe everything to this country and its values. I’ve spent most of my professional life serving them.

“Because I believe in them. I believe in our values. I believe in rules that protect those in need. I believe in the freedom to live and let live in decency and tolerance, in respect for difference under the same flag, a common good.”

He will add: “We are bound by values, by common endeavour and by responsibilities we owe to one another as partners in the project of this great nation.

“I believe in our way of doing things. That in a world that increasingly preys on weakness, I believe Britain is stronger as a tolerant, decent and respectful country.”

But a Conservative spokesperson said: “It’s hard to overstate the absurdity of Keir Starmer making a speech about values and decency the day after he admitted appointing an ambassador who had remained friends with a convicted paedophile.

“The prime minister’s authority is shot. He no longer speaks for the Labour Party, let alone the country.”

A senior Labour source said: “Have they tried burning No.10 down and starting again?”

Imane Khelif admits taking hormone treatments before Paris Olympics 2024, says she is ‘not a trans woman’

Olympic gold medallists Imane Khelif, who has been accused of being a transgender, also revealed her plans regarding a sex test for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.

Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif revealed in an interview with French sports daily L’Equipe that she had undergone hormone treatments to lower her testosterone levels ahead of the 2024 Games, but reaffirmed that she is not “transgender”.

Khelif was
embroiled in a gender row at the Paris Games where she won gold in the women’s 66kg category.

“I have female hormones. And people don’t know this, but I have taken hormone treatments to lower my testosterone levels for competitions,” the 26-year-old Algerian said in the interview published Wednesday.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Khelif speaks on Trump’s accusations

Khelif confirmed she has the SRY gene, located on the Y chromosome that indicates masculinity.

“Yes, and it’s natural,” she said, adding that she is “surrounded by doctors, a professor is monitoring me… For the Paris Games qualifying tournament, which took place in Dakar, I lowered my testosterone levels to zero”.

Like Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting, who also won gold in another category at the Paris Games, Khelif found herself at the centre of a gender row that attracted comments from US President Donald Trump and “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling.

“I respect everyone, and I respect Trump. Because he is the President of the United States. But he cannot distort the truth. I am not a trans woman, I am a girl. I was raised as a girl, I grew up as a girl, the people in my village have always known me as a girl,” Khelif said.

The boxer, who
aims to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, knows that she will have to agree to mandatory gender testing imposed by World Boxing, a body recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and says she is ready.

“For the next Games, if I have to take a test, I will. I have no problem with that,” she said.

“I’ve already taken this test. I contacted World Boxing, I sent them my medical records, my hormone tests, everything. But I haven’t had any response. I’m not hiding, I’m not refusing the tests.”

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Khelif said it was for doctors and professors to “decide”, but stated: “We all have different genetics, different hormone levels. I’m not transgender. My difference is natural. This is who I am. I haven’t done anything to change the way nature made me. That’s why I’m not afraid.”

Khelif, who has not fought since the Paris Games, as World Boxing prevented her from participating in last year’s tournament in the Netherlands because she had not undergone the newly introduced chromosome test, revealed she is awaiting a French professional boxing licence.

She said for her, it was “the logical next step”, but added that did not mean she was giving up on competing in two year’s time in LA.

“Not at all. I want to… become the first person in Algerian sport to successfully defend their Olympic title,” she said.

Expert tips for caring for hairless cats

Sharing your life with a hairless cat is a special kind of adventure—one that comes with fur-free cuddles but plenty of extra skincare quirks. Without a built-in fur coat, these cats are all about the glow-up, and it’s up to us to keep their skin feeling as fabulous as they look.

Because hairless cats don’t have fur to absorb oils, their skin works overtime, sometimes leading to buildup, greasy spots, or even the occasional breakout (yes, cats get pimples!). Their skin is also more sensitive to temperature changes, allergens, and the sun. But here’s the truth: they’re only high maintenance when things get out of balance.

The Perks of Having a Hairless Cat

The perks? No fur on your clothes, no hairballs, and no tumbleweeds of fluff under the couch. With the right routine, caring for a hairless cat like the Sphynx is simple—just different.

Caring For Hairless Cats: Bathing & More

When it comes to bathing, less is more. Many pet shampoos can dry out delicate skin, so it’s best to use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser made for cats. A full bath every 2–4 weeks will do the trick, with wipe-downs in between to keep things fresh.

Ear Cleaning: It’s a Thing

Hairless cats also need regular ear cleaning. Without fur to catch debris, wax builds up faster and can lead to infections. A gentle, vet-approved cleanser once a week helps keep their ears clean and healthy. Nails need attention too, as oils and dust can gather around the nail beds; regular trims and cleaning prevent grime (and protect your furniture).

Ingredient safety is critical. Hairless cats lick everything—including their own skin. Even products that are natural and safe for humans or dogs can be dangerous for cats. Stick to 100 percent cat-safe formulas and always read labels carefully.

Sun Protection for Hairless Cats

Sun protection is another concern. While it’s tempting to use sunscreen, there’s no scientific evidence SPF products are safe or effective for cats, and many contain harmful chemicals. Shade and indirect sunlight are the best ways to protect their skin.

At the end of the day, hairless cat care is about balance: clean but not over-washed, moisturized but not greasy, and always safe. And in return, you get a cat who never leaves fur on your favourite black sweater—and always looks runway-ready.

Trump’s emotional call to parents of fallen Staten Island Army hero Michael Ollis to reveal their son will receive Medal of Honor

President Trump had an emotional phone call with the parents of Staten Island native and Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis to inform them that their son would be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroically sacrificing his life in Afghanistan over a decade ago.

Robert and Linda Ollis were in the kitchen of their Staten Island home on Monday when the commander in chief greeted the couple on the phone and asked how they were holding up, according to a video posted on the SSG Michael Ollis Freedom Foundation Facebook page.

“We’re very nervous,” Robert said on speakerphone.

“You should be, because your son is going to get the highest honor that you can have,” Trump shared. “There is no higher honor than the Congressional Medal of Honor.”

The soldier’s father’s eyes lit up at the announcement, his expression shifting into a proud smile.

“He’s looking down at you right now, he’s saying, ‘Well, my mom and dad are handling this pretty well,’” Trump said of their son.

Ollis was just 24 years old, serving as an Army infantryman, when he was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 28, 2013, during a Taliban attack on Forward Operating Base Ghazni.

In the chaos of the attack, Ollis threw himself between a suicide bomber and a Polish officer, absorbing the deadly blast and laying down his life in an act of pure selflessness.

Witnesses said his actions likely protected more than 40 service members and civilians on the base.

Ollis was initially awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Army’s second-highest combat award, before efforts began to elevate the recognition to the Medal of Honor, according to Military Times.

After years of advocacy by his family, veteran groups, elected officials — most notably Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-NY — and the Staten Island community, Trump approved the nation’s highest military honor for Ollis.

The Medal of Honor is reserved only for service members who go above and beyond the call of duty by showing remarkable valor and selflessness in the heat of battle, at the risk of their own lives.

The Medal is awarded after cases are rigorously reviewed, a process that requires detailed battlefield reports, at least two sworn eyewitness accounts, and additional corroborating evidence.

The couple expressed deep gratitude to the president for approving the Medal of Honor, which has been awarded posthumously 618 times, according to the Army.

“Thank you so much, Mr. President. You have no idea the happiness we have,” Robert shared.

“Thank you for facilitating this! This is so wonderful,” Linda said, adding that the family had advocated for their son to receive the honor for years and reached out to countless people before he finally approved it.

Trump also applauded the parents for their tireless work to keep their son’s story alive for more than a decade.

“Otherwise, how are we going to know, right? You know, people don’t know. So I think that’s fantastic,” Trump said.

Trump then told the pair that they would head to the White House for the ceremony, where a “few” recipients would also receive the honor, noting that they were “all brave people.” The president did not clarify whom he was referring to.

“I read what your son did, and it’s — I wouldn’t do it, Linda,” Trump told Ollis’ mother about her son’s bravery.

“I’m not brave enough either,” Linda said with a soft laugh.

“Neither am I. Even though I’m a Vietnam Vet, I still wouldn’t have done it,” Robert added.

Trump encouraged them to gather the family and “go celebrate,” reminding them their son would be proud before ending the call.

Why is every EFL game kicking off one minute later than normal?

Every match across the EFL will kick off one minute later than usual across a four-day period this February to raise awareness for CPR as part of the Every Minute Matters campaign.

The campaign, which began during last season’s play-offs, is encouraging people to use the British Heart Foundation’s online RevivR tool to learn CPR, which takes just 15 minutes.

Over 400,000 people have stepped up to learn CPR since the beginning of the campaign, over four times the capacity of Wembley Stadium, with last season’s Championship play-off final between Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday also kicking off 60 seconds later for the cause.

And between Thursday 5 and Monday 9 February, the same symbolic kick-off delay will be taken across the Championship, League One and League Two, aiming to highlight how every minute matters when administering life-saving treatment.

The chances of survival after a cardiac arrest decrease by 10 per cent for every minute that passes without effective CPR or defibrillation.

The campaign also highlights that eight out of 10 cardiac arrests outside of hospital happen in the home, meaning you are far more likely to need to perform CPR on someone you love than a stranger.

The first game of the matchweek will see Accrington Stanley play host to Salford City in League Two on Thursday, with kick-off at 8:01pm. The weekend’s action, consisting of 36 EFL fixtures, will then culminate with Sheffield United’s clash with promotion-chasing Middlesbrough on Monday night, also kicking off at 8:01pm.

Luton Town will meanwhile face Bradford City in one of two League One early kick-offs on Saturday – getting underway at 12:31pm – with this cause hitting particularly close to home for the Hatters.

Their former captain Tom Lockyer, now at Bristol Rovers, collapsed on the pitch for Luton during their Championship play-off final against Coventry City in May 2023, and then suffered a cardiac arrest in a Premier League game at Bournemouth seven months later.

Lockyer is now a British Heart Foundation ambassador and said: “What happened to me can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Every year, more than 40,000 people in the UK suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and most of them never make it home.

“I’m here today because of the transformative power of CPR as every minute matters when it comes to saving a life.

“This February, we want everyone to get behind this life-saving initiative, learn the skills and be ready to step in – because your actions could give someone else the chance I was given.”

EFL chief executive officer Trevor Birch added: “Our 72 Clubs sit at the heart of their communities, and they show time and again how football can drive real-world change. The one minute kick-off adjustment is a simple, powerful reminder that swift CPR can be the difference between life and death.

“Since the launch of the Every Minute Matters campaign in May 2024, over 400,000 supporters have already begun learning CPR – now we’re calling on supporters everywhere to join them this February and help us pass the half million mark.”
