Winnipeg police have charged two women in the abduction of a two-year-old boy Friday.
A 30-year-old and a 25-year-old were arrested at a strip mall at around 1:30 p.m. that day, about half an hour after an Amber Alert was broadcast throughout Manitoba.
Winnipeg police said Sunday they’re both now facing several charges, including abduction of person under 14 years of age.
The incident began at around 10 a.m., after a dispute between the child’s biological mother and the two suspects, police said. They said the mother was assaulted, and the child was abducted to the home.
The release said the women took a taxi to the McPhillips Street and Logan Avenue area. A concerned citizen who saw the Amber Alert took the child away from the suspects and brought them to their vehicle for safety, waiting for police to arrive.
Witnesses who saw the arrest unfold told CBC News Friday they saw first responders tending to the boy inside a Pizza Pizza restaurant near the intersection where he was found. Police said Sunday the two-year-old was taken to hospital with no injuries from the incident.
Const. Stephen Spencer said in a news conference Friday the fact the child was found quickly shows how effective the Amber Alert system is.
Police said they seized a personal amount of meth from one of the women.
Both suspects have been charged with assault with weapon and possession of a weapon. The 30-year-old was also charged with fail to comply with probation order.
The 25-year-old faces several additional charges: carrying concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; allegation of non-compliance with conditional sentence order, and possession of a scheduled substance.
