March is said to come in like a lion and out like a lamb and the latest forecast for Alberta shows that the waning winter season still has some bite.

After a brief taste of spring, Albertans are being told to brace for a sudden return of wintry weather, including a big snowfall expected to hit today.

Environment Canada issued a series of warnings Thursday cautioning that communities across central and southern Alberta are about to get walloped with heavy snow and whipping winds.

Heavy snow is expected to continue today with amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres expected to hit a band of communities across central Alberta including Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer and Drumheller.

Forecasters are warning of blowing snow and poor visibility across provincial highways.

Local blowing snow is possible from Highway 36 eastwards, Environment Canada said.

Travel is expected to be challenging. Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow, officials said.

Southern winds

Further south, powerful winds are expected in communities including Lethbridge and Crownest Pass.

Strong west winds gusting to 100 km/h are expected today and travellers are being told to exercise caution.

Environment Canada warned people in affected areas to secure loose objects and expect damage.

The winds are expected to weaken this afternoon. The snow is expected to subside Thursday evening.
