Reacher star Alan Ritchson acted in self-defence in fight with neighbour, police say

Reacher star Alan Ritchson will not face criminal charges after police concluded that he acted in self defence during a confrontation with his neighbour in Tennessee.

This comes after footage released by TMZ showed Ritchson in a physical altercation with a neighbour kneeling on the ground, as the actor hit him repeatedly. However, new footage, which comes from Ritchson’s own camera, shows the 43-year-old actor’s perspective as he rides his green Kawasaki motorcycle through a suburban neighbourhood in Brentwood.

In the video, Ritchson’s neighbour can be seen stepping into the street to block Ritchson’s path before a verbal altercation escalates into the actor pushing his neighbour to the ground.

“After reviewing available evidence, including video footage and witness statements, authorities determined that no criminal charges will be pursued. Mr Ritchson’s actions were found to be in self-defence,” Brentwood police Captain Steven Pepin told The Hollywood Reporter.

Pepin added that “a potential reckless endangerment charge” against the neighbour was considered, but Ritchson “declined to pursue charges”.

“With the agreement of the District Attorney’s Office, the case is now closed, and no further action will be taken,” Pepin said.

Over the weekend, TMZ released video that showed the neighbour, identified by the outlet as Ronnie Taylor, kneeling on the ground while Ritchson hit him multiple times. However, it was later revealed that this was part of a longer altercation after additional clips, including the footage from Ritchson’s body cam, were released that showed Taylor stepping into the street causing the actor to flip over his bike’s handlebars.

Taylor told TMZ that the dispute began on Saturday, when he saw Ritchson speeding through the neighbourhood on his motorbike. After this, he confronted Ritchson on Sunday when the fight occurred and admitted he first made physical contact.

“On Sunday, when I was cleaning my bike outside my house, he rode past once, twice and on the second time, I walked out in front of him, and I said, ‘You got to stop. Someone’s going to get hurt,’” Taylor said.

“Then it escalated quite quickly from there. I did push him because he was coming towards me on his, on his bike. He did it again for a second time. I pushed him a second time, and I think the second time he got off his bike and kicked the crap outta me,” he said.

Ritchson has not yet commented publicly on the incident, although he has since posted on Instagram to share a quotation: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake – Napoleon Bonaparte.”

The Independent has approached Ritchson’s representatives for comment.

North Dakota-born Ritchson first came to prominence with a role in Smallville. He is best known for playing Jack Reacher in the Amazon Prime action series Reacher. He recently starred in the Netflix movie War Machine.
