“Who he replaces remains a big question mark” – Former India cricketer’s massive update on MS Dhoni ahead of SRH vs CSK IPL 2026 match

Former Team India batter Subramaniam Badrinath believes the return of legendary wicketkeeper MS Dhoni could raise some uncomfortable questions for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of their IPL 2026 clash against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 18. The 44-year-old has missed the side’s first five games due to a calf injury, sustained ahead of the start of the season.

However, recent updates suggest Dhoni’s return to full fitness and action is as close as it has ever been this season. While it remains highly doubtful that the former skipper plays in the SRH clash, he could be available from the next game.

Talking about CSK’s potential conundrum upon Dhoni’s return, Badrinath said on his YouTube channel (9:31):

“He is the elephant in the room. There is still no update on his return. But I feel he won’t play against SRH. Who he replaces remains a big question mark, especially when they’ve just got their combination sorted.”

CSK got off to the worst possible start in the ongoing season, losing their opening three matches handily. However, the five-time champions have seemingly rediscovered their mojo, with commanding wins in their last two outings.

“It may be okay if he’s not back just yet” – S Badrinath on MS Dhoni’s return

Subramaniam Badrinath believes CSK might be fine even if MS Dhoni takes longer to return, given their newfound overall balance in the lineup. Yet, the former batter also suggested that the veteran’s presence behind the stumps will add immense intangible value, even if Sanju Samson will be forced to play as a fielder.

“It may be okay if he’s not back just yet. Though his fans want him back, I am not sure how the CSK management looks at this situation. If he comes back, Sanju Samson also has to field. But Dhoni’s return will definitely be a boost, especially on intangibles,” said Badrinath (via the aforementioned source).

MS Dhoni endured a poor IPL 2025 season, scoring under 200 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17.
