It took firefighters around 10 hours to extinguish the blaze
A large fire broke out at a Cambridgeshire recycling centre. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue were called to the recycling centre on Knights End Road in March at around 7pm on Thursday (April 16).
Firefighters arrived to thick smoke in the air, and nearby residents were told to keep their doors and windows closed. The fire took crews around 10 hours to extinguish, before crews returned to their stations at 5.30am today (Friday, April 17).
A fire spokesperson said: “On Thursday at 7.07pm, crews were called to a fire at a recycling centre on Knights End Road, March. Crews from March, Chatteris, Wisbech, Manea, Whittlesey and the water carrier from Ramsey responded.
“Firefighters arrived to find thick smoke coming from the premises and a large amount of scrap metal on fire. Using jets and hose reels, firefighters worked hard to get the fire under control and prevent further spread.
“Firefighters scaled down and left the area by 5.30am. During the incident, residents nearby were encouraged to close windows and doors due to the smoke.” The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.
