Luminar 1.27 Update Makes Your (Self)Portraits Look Like You Slept Just Fine

Skylum has released Luminar 1.27, an update squarely aimed at portrait photographers. The biggest additions are to Skin AI and Face AI, and they should help you get cleaner portraits without spending hours retouching photos. So, let’s see what’s new.

What’s New in Luminar 1.27

Skin AI now separates skin and face retouching into distinct controls. The old Blemish Removal checkbox has been replaced with a slider, so you can have more control and dial in the amount of correction you want. I’m sure you’ll agree that this is more practical than toggling between “untouched” and “plastic.”

Face AI gets a new dark circle reduction tool that automatically detects eyes even on slightly turned faces. And oh boy, I’d pay for a tool like this in real life so I don’t have to choose between applying concealer and scaring little children in the street with my Uncle Fester look.

Also new is Mask Feather, which softens the edges of local adjustments like brightness tweaks or background changes. It should now make those edits blend more naturally into the image.

The headline feature on the creative side is Bokeh 2.0. While the other features are aimed particularly at portrait photography, this one extends beyond it. The previous version was portrait-focused, but this update extends background blur to any subject, from wildlife to still life. It uses multi-stage depth map prediction to better understand where things actually are in a scene. You still have full control over the intensity of the effect.

The update also brings better cross-device consistency. All the new updates and improvements are available on both desktop and mobile, with improved edit synchronization between the two.
