The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has issued a flood warning for Kitchener as heavy rain continues to batter the region.

River flows are expected to exceed flood thresholds and low-lying areas may be subject to flooding.

West Montrose is also under a flood warning, while Ayr and New Hamburg are under a flood watch. The flood warning and watch will remain in place until April 20.

A flood warning means flooding is occurring or about to occur, while a flood watch means flooding is possible.

According to the GRCA, the watershed has received 20 to 50 mm of rain since Monday, and another 20 mm is expected this week on Wednesday and Thursday.

The GRCA is urging residents to be cautious around local waterways, as rising river levels increase safety risk around rivers, streams and waterbodies.

Wednesday’s weather brings a 40 per cent chance of showers along with the risk of a thunderstorm. Chances of showers are expected to continue for the rest of the week, with possible flurries on Sunday.
