“I did not expect to get the knockout” – Sam-A Gaiyanghadao reacts to his stunning highlight-reel finish at ONE Fight Night 42

Muay Thai living legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao came to Bangkok with a game plan. But what unfolded at ONE Fight Night 42 surpassed even his own expectations.

The 42-year-old striking specialist produced one of the most breathtaking finishes of the year, stopping Moroccan knockout artist Elmehdi ‘The Sniper’ El Jamari with a walk-off head kick KO at the 2:43 mark of round two.

The stunning performance also earned Sam-A a well-deserved US$50,000 performance bonus from ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

It was the kind of fight that aged a decade in the space of two rounds at ONE Fight Night 42: Mann vs. Dzhabrailov on Prime Video on Friday, April 10, inside Bangkok’s legendary Lumpinee Stadium.

El Jamari came out with hostile intent, throwing heavy boxing combinations and catching Sam-A Gaiyanghadao with a sharp right hand that underscored exactly why he was considered a genuine threat.

The Thai veteran absorbed it all with the composure of a man who has seen everything, timing El Jamari with a crushing left hand whenever the Moroccan pressed forward.

Round two descended into pure chaos. Sam-A dropped El Jamari twice in rapid succession with pinpoint punching, and then found himself on the canvas moments later after the Moroccan rallied with a furious counter barrage that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

It looked, briefly, like the script had been flipped entirely. Then Sam-A landed a perfectly timed head kick as El Jamari charged in for another knockdown to put him down for good.

Speaking to ONE Championship in the aftermath of the finish, the legend himself admitted he never saw it coming.

“Yes, I’m very happy to get the win today, and I did not expect to get the knockout because I thought it was going to be a longer [fight], but I saw the opening, so I went for it,” Sam-A Gaiyanghadao shared.

Sam-A Gaiyanghadao reignites ONE world title pursuit after sensational ONE Fight Night 42 knockout

The victory nudged Sam-A Gaiyanghadao’s career record to 378-50 and made an emphatic statement to the entire strawweight division.

At 42 years old, with a finish this spectacular on a stage this big, Sam-A’s pursuit of one more world title reign is no longer a sentimental notion. It is a legitimate threat.

ONE strawweight Muay Thai world champion Prajanchai PongSuphan PK better be taking notes because if the Evolve MMA affiliate brings the same calculated aggression and violence into his next world title fight, the divisional crown could shift hands once more.
