Manchester United fell to a 2-1 defeat to Leeds on Monday night and there was a controversial incident in the second half that saw Lisandro Martinez sent off.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke admitted he would have rather played 11 vs 11 after his side secured a 2-1 win over 10-man Manchester United on Monday.

Leeds held a two-goal lead at half-time thanks to a double from Noah Okafor. United looked to mount a comeback in the second half but their task was made tougher when Lisandro Martinez was sent off for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair.

United actually looked a better side after being reduced to 10 men, but they couldn’t get back on level terms, with Casemiro’s strike proving to be little more than a consolation in a 2-1 defeat.

Michael Carrick was left furious by the decision to send Martinez off, claiming it was “worrying” to see such an incident result in a red card. Farke was asked for his thoughts on the decision, and he told Sky Sports: “I’ve not seen it [the challenge] back, I was just told it was a hair pull and for that a red card.

“I was a bit worried because we had such good momentum and sometimes such a situation can change the momentum, I would have preferred, more or less, to play 11 vs 11, but it is how it is and in the end we won the game.”

Farke was asked to give his view on the contest and he was pleased with Leeds’ display, although he did feel his side were playing with fire by not killing the game earlier, pointing to the quality United possess.

“They are a team packed with top-class players, they could bring quality from the bench and if you don’t bury the game it’s always something possible,” he added.
