Edmonton police have charged a teen in relation to a stabbing incident at a west Edmonton high school on Friday, that left one student hospitalized.

Just before noon that day, police responded to reports of a stabbing at Jasper Place High School. It was reported that a 16-year-old boy confronted another 16-year-old boy over a verbal argument earlier that day.

Police say the victim reported attempted to walk away before he was attacked by the suspect. Several youths tried to restrain the suspect, but he was able to break free and leave the school.

The school was placed on lockdown, and officers were able to locate the suspect nearby.

The injured student was then taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, and has since been released from hospital to recover at home.

The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and criminal harassment.

“We are grateful for the immediate life-saving actions of school staff and our SRO, as well as the rapid response of our frontline patrol members and school partners,” said EPS Staff Sgt. Derek Onysko in a news release Monday.
