Man United’s strongest lineup in push for Champions League qualification

Man United will resume their Premier League campaign tomorrow when they take on fierce rivals Leeds at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are entering the final stretch of the Premier League season after a mammoth break. March internationals, combined with an early FA Cup exit, mean there are 24 days separating United’s last match at Bournemouth and their next one against Leeds.

When the Reds return to action tomorrow night, they know Champions League qualification is in their own hands. Arsenal’s victory over Sporting on Tuesday evening ensured the top five in the Premier League will qualify for the competition next season. Michael Carrick’s side hold a seven-point lead over sixth-placed Chelsea.

While fifth is a handy insurance policy, United will be expected to finish in the top four at the very least. Five wins from their last seven matches will guarantee Champions League football. MEN Sport has picked the strongest available XI for the run-in.

Goalkeeper – Senne Lammens

An easy first choice. Lammens has been impressive since being given his chance in the victory over Sunderland. The Belgian has been a breath of fresh air at Old Trafford and will hold down the first-choice spot for many years to come.

Defenders – Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw

Noussair Mazraoui will push Dalot all the way but the Portuguese defender just edges it at this stage. Yoro has improved of late but Martinez is a starter when available.

Maguire is currently suspended after his sending off last time out but he will go straight into the team when available with Matthijs de Ligt still injured. Nobody is even close to challenging Luke Shaw for the left-back spot.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.

Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.

Midfielders – Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo

Of course it is these two and it is not close either. Casemiro will leave a United favourite when he was once in danger of being remembered as a one-season wonder.

Mainoo has settled back into the starting line-up brilliantly having been unfairly overlooked by Ruben Amorim. Carrick will be concerned if either man gets injured as the options to replace them aren’t great.

Forwards – Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko

Fernandes’ inclusion is obvious. He has carried United during difficult moments and the Reds will be praying he agrees a new deal this summer.

Mbeumo has gone off the boil recently compared to the start of the season but on the right flank he can look more dangerous than Amad. The left wing is more of a struggle and while Cunha can play there, it is clear he would be better down the middle.

Patrick Dorgu would have been picked if not for injury. The Dane will return before the end of the season but it is not clear how much of a part he will play in the run-in so we’ll stick with Cunha on the left. Up front, Sesko is United’s best striker and his form has been good since Amorim left.
