An Edmonton high school student is in hospital with injuries after an incident at Jasper Place High School on Friday, according to police.
Police arrived at the school, located in the city’s west end, at around noon. The school was put on lockdown at around 12:15 p.m.
Police said neighbouring schools were also put on lockdown as a precaution.
Police did not describe what type of incident occurred but said a suspect was later located nearby and taken into custody.
Emergency Health Services told CBC News in a statement that a patient was transported to hospital from the school’s location in “unstable, potentially life-threatening condition.”
No other injuries have been reported. Police said they are investigating the incident, but added there is no additional threat to students or the public.
Sixteen-year-old Akaash Dhaliwal is a student at the school. He said the school is typically safe, and the lockdown came as a shock.
“They just said we had to go into a classroom for a lockdown and I think we were all confused why,” Dhaliwal said. “We didn’t really know why. … At first some people were thinking it was a drill.”
Omar Addali said he is the parent of a student at the school. He said he received a text from the school about a lockdown, and rushed over to make sure his child was safe.
“You’re expecting when you drop your kid off at school [that they’ll] be safe,” Addali said.
“Hopefully it won’t happen again.”
Currently, there are over 3,000 students enrolled at the school.
In a statement to CBC News, a spokesperson for the Edmonton Public School Board said students were dismissed early as a result of the undisclosed incident.
“The division takes incidents like this very seriously and the safety of students and staff is our top priority,” the spokesperson said.
“Students and staff were safe as the police worked to resolve the situation.”
