Manchester United transfer could hinge on ‘special £1.7m clause’

Manchester United are expected to reinvest in midfield this summer, with Casemiro set to depart and uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s long‑term future at the club

Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller appears to be on Manchester United’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, with the club expected to move for a new midfield signing. Casemiro will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season when his contract expires, while Manuel Ugarte’s future remains uncertain.

Stiller was linked with United last summer, though the recruitment team ultimately pursued other options. Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens all arrived instead.

United continue to monitor Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson, Bruno Guimaraes and Adam Wharton, but Stiller is also viewed as a potential target. However, Stuttgart have put themselves in a strong position to keep him.

They can buy out his €40m (£34m) release clause for just €2m (£1.7m), allowing them to retain him at that price or sell him later for a significant profit. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, this option can be activated ‘at any time’, and Stiller ‘cannot reject it,’ and he would receive the £1.7m payment ‘immediately.’

It is also noted that his contract, which runs until the summer of 2028, would remain unchanged – only the £34m clause would be removed.

For United and other interested clubs, this means any transfer fee would have to be negotiated directly with Stuttgart, and a move would only be possible if a substantial offer arrives.

Last November, Stuttgart’s sporting director, Fabian Wohlgemuth, was asked about the future of Stiller, to which he replied: “He has a contract with us. It’s far too early to speculate about that.

“Of course, one or two clubs will have had their eye on him. He’s having an outstanding season. Maybe he’ll even play in a World Cup, we’ll see.

“We’re happy he’s with us. That’s part of the entertainment we have to cover. But there’s nothing concrete. He can concentrate fully on VfB Stuttgart.”

The German international has played 44 games across all competitions this season, scoring one goal and providing six assists.
