West Montrose and St. Jacobs are under a flood warning after heavy rains led to rising water levels on Tuesday, the Grand River Conservation Authority says.

The authority notes the rest of the watershed, which stretches from Drayton south to Lake Erie and includes all of Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County, remains under a flood watch.

West Montrose is expected to see river levels peak Tuesday afternoon and people in flood warning zone one are being told to take precautions.

In St. Jacobs, high river flows “have resulted in flooding of low-lying areas … and may continue to affect this area into Wednesday,” the authority said.

The Environment and Climate Change Canada weather station at the Region of Waterloo International Airport reported thunderstorms moved through the region between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., an a severe thunderstorm warning was issued.

Intermittent rain persisted through the rest of the day. The forecast said up to 35 mm of rain was possible in the area by Wednesday morning.

Wednesday is expected to be a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 9 C, then rain is in the forecast from Thursday to Sunday.
