This was reportedly put in with the view of Verstappen being able to explore his options if the Laurent Mekies-led outfit failed to be competitive amid the new regulations in 2026.

It is understood that if Max Verstappen is not in the top three of the drivers’ standings by a certain date in the contract, he could leave the Milton Keynes-based outfit. This is similar but stricter than the exit clause discussed last year, which supposedly permitted the driver to walk away if he was outside the top-3 in the standings by the summer break in 2025.

Verstappen sits ninth in the 2026 drivers’ standings after three rounds. Currently, it seems very unlikely that the four-time world champion will reach the top two at any point this year, especially given the RB22’s lack of competitiveness along with Mercedes’ dominance.
