3 reasons why IPL 2026 match against KKR is MI’s best chance to end opening game curse
The Mumbai Indians (MI) are renowned for a lot of things over the years. As much as they are well-known for lifting trophies, their surprising trend of losing their first match is also almost as popular among fans and pundits. The five-time winners have not won their opening match of the campaign since the 2012 season, when they defeated the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk comprehensively.
Since then, the team have been accustomed to being slow starters, and peaking at the right time. A superstitional element has also emerged since in all of the five seasons MI have won between 2013 and 2020, they have lost the opening game.
Whether they are favorites or going through a transitional phase, it all becomes null and void, because MI during their opening game is a different phenomenon altogether. However, in the upcoming 2026 season, the stars have finally seemed to align, giving the franchise nearly all of the elements in their favor to end the dreaded streak, which has defied logic.
On that note, let us take a look at the three reasons why the IPL 2026 match against KKR is MI’s best chance to end the opening game curse.
#1 First opening game at the Wankhede since IPL 2019
In recent years, MI’s case to win their first game has not been helped by the choice of venues that have had to play in. While almost all of the teams have had the luxury of kick-starting their campaign at home at some point or another in the recent past, MI have not had the opportunity for seven years.
The last time they played the first match of the campaign at the Wankhede Stadium was in IPL 2019, against the Delhi Capitals (DC), where they lost by 37 runs. In the following years, they have opened their campaign in Abu Dhabi, Chennai, Brabourne, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Chennai once again.
While in the initial years of this phase, all teams had to play in neutral venues due to the COVID-19 wave. Despite the home and away format returning with the crowd in 2023, MI had to wait for several years before getting a home game to begin their season.
It proves to be a massive factor as the franchise holds a staggering win percentage of 60.82 at the venue. They have recorded 56 wins at the venue, which is the most by any IPL franchise in a single stadium.
#2 A dominant head-to-head record against KKR at the Wankhede
KKR have been one of the most accomplished franchises in IPL history, winning the title thrice, and setting a standard for other teams to follow. However, despite all of their accomplishments, they have never quite been able to crack the code against the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Although KKR may have turned the tide around in recent years, they are still quite behind in this particular rivalry among heavyweights. The franchise have particularly struggled at the Wankhede Stadium, which, apart from its small dimensions, could not be more different.
The only times KKR have won at the Wankhede is when they have had title-winning squads, like in 2012 and 2024. However, with the team still settling in after a major transition in terms of both coaching staff and players, they have an uphill task against a well-settled MI side in their fortress.
#3 MI’s hunger and KKR’s bowling crisis
Aside from the venue and the history between the two teams, the assurance of MI on paper compared to KKR’s hit-or-miss line-up also speak volumes. MI’s sheer experience and stable combination give them a huge head start over KKR who are starting fresh.
If the instability and uncertainties brought on by the transition were not enough, KKR have the misfortune of taking along a second-string bowling unit to perhaps one of their most difficult fixtures in the season. With the likes of Matheesha Pathirana, Harshit Rana, and Akash Deep, probably their three-most experienced pacers in the IPL, unavailable.
KKR have to bank on inexperience against an accomplished batting unit that ticks all of the boxes. Vaibhav Arora and Blessing Muzarabani have returned figures of 0-35 (3 overs) and 2-42, respectively, in their sole major T20 outing at the Wankhede so far. Furthermore, their star spinner Varun Chakaravarthy was recently hit for 64 runs off four overs at the very same venue, and has struggled for form.
With all of these aspects that MI can capitalise on, this is easily one of their best opportunities over the years to get their campaign started off with a win.
