Miley Cyrus hates the ‘Hannah Montana’ Season 3 wig as much as I do
For nearly two decades, I have held resentment for the makeover Disney Channel gave to Hannah Montana between Season 2 and Season 3 — and now that I know Miley Cyrus has the same opinion, I feel vindicated.
Hannah Montana, which aired between 2006 and 2010, followed Miley Stewart’s life as a regular teenage girl by day, who, with the help of her disguising blonde wig and to-die-for wardrobe, turned into a pop sensation by night.
When Miley announced her Hannahversary—a.k.a the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special that dropped on Disney+ today—my social media pages were flooded with nostalgia, from unseen photos of the star as a teenager, to polls questioning which Hannah Montana style reigned supreme. Much to my surprise, many of these millennial and early Gen Z voters favored the neon colors and zebra print shown in Hannah Montana Season 3 over the iconic sequined scarves, cropped jackets, and (old) blue jeans the pop star sported in Seasons 1 and 2.
The wardrobe wasn’t the only thing that changed between the years 2008 and 2009. Hannah Montana’s legendary wig, once a pin-straight blonde do that extended down to Miley’s mid-back, was chopped to lay just below her shoulders, and curled with a wavy style. I can understand Disney’s desire to evolve Hannah’s signature look, but there was something about the new style that didn’t feel very quintessential Hannah — or Miley, for that matter.

In the 20th anniversary special, Miley revisits her character’s iconic closet with her real-life mom, Tish Cyrus. The Grammy-winner credits her mom for much of Hannah’s distinguishable style, noting just how involved Tish was behind the scenes. As they pull out old pieces from the Hannah archive, Miley shares her unfiltered thoughts on each outfit. “Ew! I hated this look. This was not for me,” Miley confesses, holding up a pair of white jeans with the words “Teen Dream” printed across the pant legs, an article of clothing that was infamously paired with a pink and black zebra-print T-shirt. “I just never loved these jeans,” Miley says. “Trauma!”
Grabbing for the cropped wig she sported in Season 3 and Hannah Montana: The Movie, Miley says, “This was a later season when Hannah got a bit of a shorter haircut. This is when they lost me. We literally quit. We do not take our inches as a joke.” Moving over to the longer wigs from Season 1 and Season 2, Miley gleefully tells her mom, “These are more us.”
To hear Miley and Tish validate a gripe I’ve had with the series for so long was freeing, to say the least. For Hannah to go from early aughts rock star chic to Disney Channel teeny-bopper has always been disappointing to me, even as a nine-year-old child.

When it came to her clothes, Miley was growing up both in the series and in the real world—as were her fans—while Disney was doing everything they could to age her down. Perhaps this was partially to blame for 2013 Miley, but that’s a conversation for another day. Regarding her hair, each strand of the OG wig was perfectly placed. With its soft layering and expert blending of highlights and lowlights, anyone who didn’t know any better could easily be fooled into believing it was natural. If only they had 33-year-old Miley there to tell them, “It ain’t broke — don’t fix it!” Meanwhile, the Season 3 wig was frumpy, frizzy, and … well … it looked like a costume wig! It’s a shock to me that Miley Stewart’s schoolmates didn’t crack the code sooner with that old thang.
In the face of being forced to wear underwhelming wigs in the later years of Hannah Montana, for two more seasons and an entire movie, Miley continued to perfectly embody the exact character that everyone fell in love with in the first place. When she returned for the 20th anniversary special with those beloved Season 1 locks, all she did was prove that you can change your hair and you can change your clothes, but you’ll always find your way back home.
