Threats to TDSB high schools deemed not credible, police say

Eleven Toronto District School Board high schools received threats on Monday, the first day students returned from their March Break, although Toronto Police deemed the threats not to be credible after an investigation.

The first threat was sent to Marc Garneau High School in Thorncliffe Park early in the morning. The school was evacuated while police investigated, but they said the threat was unfounded and students were allowed back into the school.

Another threat was sent to Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute at Lawrence Ave. E. and Kennedy Rd. The school went into a hold and secure and once again police deemed the threat unfounded.

Same person made calls: Police

The schools were allegedly contacted by voicemail by the same person, Toronto Police told CBC.

“We have been made aware of 11 threats to high schools within the TDSB on Monday. It is believed that the voicemail came from the same individual(s). Officers attended all the locations, investigated and deemed that there was no credible threat,” Toronto Police said.

The board sent an email later on in the day to students and families at the schools saying that police were immediately contacted and that there was no credible threat to any of the schools, local media reported.

Which schools were affected?

According to a TDSB spokesperson, the targeted schools were:

— William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute.

— Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute.

— Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts.

— York Mills Collegiate Institute.

— York Humber High School

— Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute.

— Leaside High School.

— Monarch Park Collegiate Institute.

— Maplewood High School.

— Yorkdale Adult Learning Centre.

— West End Alternative School.

No arrests had been made, but the board added the investigation is ongoing and that anyone with information about the incidents is asked to get in touch with Toronto Police.
