The family of a man accused of killing his mother as a teen cheered and applauded in a Winnipeg courtroom as a Manitoba judge ordered a stay of proceedings in the case.
Manitoba Court of King’s Bench Justice Kenneth Champagne granted a request from James Lockyer, the now 23-year-old man’s lawyer, for a stay of proceedings on Monday morning, agreeing that the accused’s Charter rights were breached.
Since early February, a jury has heard competing arguments over whether the 23-year-old man beat his mother, 51, to death in 2019.
The 23-year-old hugged his family one by one after Champagne gave the decision.
Champagne will return to give his reasons later Monday morning.
