A quintessential English town, with narrow cobbled lanes and surrounded by diverse landscapes, offers a glimpse into bygone eras.
The historic town of Petworth in Sussex is characterised by winding cobbled streets, 17th-century Georgian architecture and charming stone cottages. It’s ideally located just over half an hour’s drive from Chichester and approximately 50 minutes from Portsmouth, providing a wonderful day out amongst its unspoilt surroundings.
There are tight alleyways that lead to hidden treasures dotted throughout the town, with antique shops and independent retailers, accompanied by cafés, delicatessens, and welcoming pubs. Due to its picturesque location, it was even named by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the UK’s most beautiful towns.
The medieval town, boasting more than 400 listed buildings, is also famous for its flourishing art and antiques scene, with numerous galleries and over 30 antique shops where you can discover historical finds.
One of the most sought-after destinations for vintage items is Petworth Antiques Market, showcasing more than 40 dealers selling everything from beautiful furniture to ornaments and a vast array of homeware, reports the Mirror.
One visitor raved on TripAdvisor: “I absolutely love going to the Petworth Antique Market, the customer service is amazing with extremely friendly, helpful staff, and I always always find beautiful treasures there!!”
Visitors certainly won’t go hungry during a visit to Petworth, with The Hungry Guest on Middle Street amongst its standout establishments, offering seasonal, locally sourced dishes that have enhanced the town’s culinary standing. There’s also a selection of welcoming pubs, including The Welldiggers Arms, The Black Horse Inn and The Angel Inn.
Beyond the town centre, Petworth offers a paradise for keen walkers, with varied landscapes easily accessible from the charming town, including the dramatic chalk hills of the South Downs National Park and the ancient woodland of The Mens Nature Reserve. However, Petworth House and Park remains the town’s most significant attraction, with its extensive 700-acre parkland surrounding the magnificent 17th-century Petworth House.
Those visiting can explore the historic stately home and discover an outstanding collection of world-class art and sculptures. The estate represents one of the finest surviving examples of an English landscape created by the celebrated Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
There are also hundreds of deer roaming freely throughout Petworth Park that can be readily observed, or visitors can take in the stunning views of the South Downs whilst walking around the grounds.
The National Trust park has certainly placed Petworth on the map, particularly after featuring in major film productions, such as Napoleon, Rebecca, and Maleficent, as well as Netflix’s popular drama Bridgerton.
After a visit, one visitor enthused: “Another National Trust gem! Had a wonderful day there. So much to see and wonderful walks in the grounds and deer park. The art collection is outstanding, and as usual, the volunteers in the house were great. Had an interesting talk in the square dining room about the family’s history. Found the kitchens fascinating! Great cafe too. Highly recommend.”
