Blue Jays fall to Phillies in Spring Breakout game

After being held to just one run throughout the contest’s first eight innings, the Blue Jays strung together a rally in the ninth, capped by Juan Sanchez’s bases-clearing double to cut the deficit to one. It was too little, too late, however, as Aaron Parker grounded out two batters later to end the threat.

Austin Cates, Toronto’s seventh-round pick in 2024, surrendered homers to Phillies second baseman Aroon Escobar and first baseman Felix Reyes to open the game before settling in to deliver three innings of work.

Phillies starter and 2025 first-round pick Gage Wood struck out three over three frames of one-run ball.

While the Blue Jays’ offence was mostly held quiet early, it did push a run across in the third inning when Charles McAdoo brought home Sean Keys with an RBI infield single

Following Cates in relief was Toronto’s No. 6 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, Gage Stanifer, who didn’t allow a hit and collected four strikeouts over three scoreless innings.

Stanifer, who climbed three minor-league levels in a breakout 2025 season, reached 97.4 m.p.h. with his fastball and struck out the side in the fifth inning.

Toronto’s 2025 first-rounder JoJo Parker made his first appearance in a Blue Jays uniform in the game. The 19-year-old went 1-for-1 with a 109.1 m.p.h. single and a walk after replacing Arjun Nimmala in the sixth inning.

Adam Macko allowed three runs to score in the eighth inning on four hits.

MLB implemented the Spring Breakout games in 2023, giving clubs the chance to showcase their top prospects during spring training. The event is scheduled to expand into a tournament in 2027.
