Even at a Children’s Hospital, Therapy Cats Visit Everyone

I started my therapy cat visit at the children’s hospital right away. There were several kids in the lobby to see. One little girl even got to see me ring a bell for her!
While we were busy, a kid on crutches came in with his dad. The dad was wearing a suit and looked both concerned and preoccupied. They sat on one of the sofas, and I came over to visit the boy. He happily petted me, as his dad looked over at me and smiled. It turned out they had a cat at home.
I had lots of exam visits, and one of the first was a boy in a wheelchair with several family members. My human set me on his lap — I’m not normally a lap cat, but there was room for me so I could feel comfortable. He and his whole family were very glad I was there.
My human popped her head into one room, and asked the boy on the exam table if he wanted to see me. He shrugged and said no, and my human was ready to find me another room. But then he stopped her and said his mom wanted to see me! So of course we came in and visited with her. Sometimes the parents need a kitty visit more than their kids do.
We stopped by the casting rooms, and made sure to check the POP (Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic) rooms — they are easy to miss. And we found one girl getting a leg brace. She enjoyed seeing me. After that we had just enough time to stop by the surgery area.
In addition to the patients and their parents, we also make sure to visit with staff. The nurses at the surgery area station are always really happy to see me, and I posed for photos. The rooms with pre-op patients were full, and I saw a couple of boys who weren’t sedated yet.
It was a full, fun day!
