It’s a second straight term as chief of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation for Sean Smith.

Smith defeated challenger Darlene Smith, no relation, in the Yukon First Nation’s general election Wednesday.

As of midday Thursday, the First Nation’s returning officer had yet to release vote totals for the election.

Speaking to CBC’s Midday Cafe host Leonard Linklater, Sean Smith said he wants to use the First Nation’s self-government authority to improve material conditions for its citizens.

“It’s really just all kinds of different opportunities to achieve those things, ensuring people have good housing, create employment and … personal wellness,” he said.

Smith, a former councillor, unseated former chief Doris Bill to win a three-year term in 2023.

Kwanlin Dün voters also cast ballots for a new council Wednesday. The First Nation said Shirley Bien, Amanda Calberry, Charlene Charlie, Troy Friday, Mike Stanley and Lester Wilson won seats.

Twenty-two people were in the running for the six council seats.
