867-5309 gets new home as number from 1980s hit is redirected to a new helpline

The iconic “867-5309/Jenny” tune from the ‘80s now has a special meaning, with calls to that number being directed to a cancer support helpline.

Cancer Support Community is collaborating with a healthcare partner site to take an unforgettable phone number, 867-5309, featured in the iconic pop song by Tommy Tutone.

Effective Tuesday, anyone impacted by cancer can call 272-867-5309 to receive “immediate support, trusted information, and personalized guidance from trained specialists,” according to a press release. 272 is also special because it spells Cancer Support Community’s abbreviations, CSC, on a telephone keypad.

“Our Helpline receives over 20,000 calls annually from people seeking hope and connection during the times they need it most,” Sally Werner, CEO of Cancer Support Community, said in a statement. “By anchoring CSC-867-5309 into the public consciousness, we’re ensuring that when someone is impacted by cancer, Cancer Support Community and Gilda’s Clubs are the first place they turn to.”

“The power of this campaign is its simplicity. In the 1980s, Tommy Tutone made ‘Jenny/867-5309’ impossible to forget,” Lisa E. Ireland, Executive Vice President, External Relations at Cancer Support Community, added. “Now, we’re channeling that same iconic number to help people remember that cancer support is just a call away.”

All calls made to CSC-867-5309 are confidential, answered by specially trained staff, and can be made at no cost.

The lead singer of Tommy Tutone, Tommy Heath, spoke about the success of the 1981 song and how thrilled he is about its involvement with the Cancer Support Community.

“When we recorded ‘Jenny/867-5309,’ none of us imagined that number would still be stuck in people’s heads decades later,” he said in a statement. “If that little piece of pop culture can now help someone remember Cancer Support Community’s and Gilda’s Club’s Helpline and connect them to real people, real community, and real support, that’s incredibly meaningful to us.”

“867-5309/Jenny” became a huge part of the ‘80s pop culture, and it quickly reached the No. 4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart after its release. The song is about a guy who is romanticizing a phone number he found on a bathroom wall.

During a 2020 interview with Forbes, Heath opened up about why he thought the song was so popular, saying it had something to do with its “numerology” or “magic combination.”

“It’s kind of a nursery rhyme, but I think I injected some soul into it. You know, if I could only figure that out, if there was a formula,” he explained. “I did do a follow-up record a few years later when I was on my own. I took it in to this guy, and he listened and couldn’t find anything that sounded like ‘Jenny,’ so he didn’t know if it was any good. He literally couldn’t tell!”

Originally, Tommy Tutone, founded by Heath and lead guitarist Jim Keller, broke up in 1983, after the release of their third album. Heath later reformed the band in 1994, as the only original member in it.

During its most recent performances, the band has included Heath as the lead singer, Jimmy James on drums, Greg Georgeson, and Christy Lichtenstein on bass.
