Nathan Nanemahoo pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Monday in the death of 37-year-old Krishnil Mani, which occurred almost two years ago.
Nanemahoo had originally been charged with second-degree murder before entering the guilty plea accepted by Justice Susan Richardson at the Edmonton Court of King’s Bench.
An agreed statement of facts read in court says Edmonton police responded to a 911 call placed by Nanemahoo at about 5:13 a.m. on June 26, 2024.
Nanemahoo told officers he had stabbed a man who entered his apartment by scaling the exterior of the building on Whyte Avenue to his third-floor balcony.
When police arrived, they found Mani lying on his side in the living room with a pool of blood around his head and upper body. A knife was found nearby.
The court heard that Mani suffered 38 stab wounds to the neck, head and upper back, with an absence of defensive wounds.
Nanemahoo admitted he knew Mani prior to the killing. According to the agreed statement of facts, Mani had been staying at Nanemahoo’s apartment off and on but had overstayed his welcome.
Nanemahoo told police he acted in self-defence, claiming Mani had threatened him with a knife.
The court also heard that Nanemahoo had called 911 twice in the days before the killing asking police to remove Mani from the apartment.
During that time, the agreed statement says Mani allegedly told Nanemahoo, “You know I’m a killer, right?” when asked to leave.
Mani had a prior criminal record for manslaughter and had previously served a 12-year prison sentence, the court heard.
A psychological report presented to the court states that Nanemahoo has significant developmental and mental health challenges, including an IQ of 71, post-traumatic stress disorder and symptoms consistent with schizophrenia. The report also indicates he has language abilities comparable to those of a 12-year-old.
Nanemahoo is scheduled to be sentenced in June.
