Quebec’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances of a fatal shooting by Sûreté du Québec officers on Saturday evening in St-Raphaël, about 65 kilometres east of Quebec City.

The

Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes

said in a statement on Sunday that, according to preliminary reports communicated to the agency, a 911 call was made at 6:18 p.m. about a person in possession of a firearm. Police located the person at home, set up a security perimeter and then tried to contact them.

According to the BEI, the person did not obey police orders and left the residence with a firearm. An officer then fired in the direction of the person, who was injured by the police gunfire. The victim was then taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The investigation was launched by the BEI at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday.

Five BEI investigators have been assigned to the case, and will be supported by the Quebec City police force.

The BEI investigates whenever someone other than a police officer on duty is seriously injured or killed during a police intervention or while being detained by police.

Any witness to the event is asked to communicate with the BEI via
