An emergency alert has been issued in Prince George, B.C., due to a gas leak that officials say poses a threat to human life.

The City of Prince George issued the alert at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, ordering people in a specific area of the city to evacuate immediately.

According to the city, the evacuation zone includes the area north of Fifth Avenue to Zion Lutheran Church and east of Tabor Boulevard west of Voyageur Drive.

Officials say people in the affected area should evacuate to Zion Lutheran Christian Church at 180 Tabor Boulevard, where city emergency management staff are on site to assist.

In a media release, the city said Prince George Fire Rescue crews, RCMP and FortisBC crews are at the scene working to address what is believed to be an underground gas leak.

Officials say power has also been shut off in the impacted area.

Nearby businesses, including a Shell gas station and a McDonald’s, are closed in the affected area.
