Aklavik’s water treatment plant broke down Monday.

Today, the hamlet is urging residents to conserve water and for local offices to temporarily shut down while the repairs are completed.

The hamlet first alerted residents Monday afternoon that there was a problem at the water treatment plant. Aklavik’s SAO told CBC the hamlet was working to repair the issue that afternoon.

On Tuesday, staff from the Town of Inuvik were on their way to Aklavik, a Facebook post from the hamlet states.

Schools and offices around the community are announcing their temporary closures. The Moose Kerr School announced it would shut down Tuesday over the water issues.

The Ehdiitat Gwich’in Council said it was closing down the Chief Andrew Stewart Building until further notice.

The hamlet says it will provide an update by 9 p.m. today.
