Hamilton, Niagara and Brantford are under a weather warning and can expect “significant rainfall” Tuesday night, according to Environment Canada.

The three areas are expected to get 20 to 40 mm of rain, which will be “heavy at times,” the federal weather agency said, but some areas may get more rain and thunderstorms. The rain is expected to start Tuesday night and last through Wednesday.

In a weather statement, Environment Canada said the saturated frozen ground “will have little ability to absorb” the rain, so flash floods and water pooling are possible.

Conservation authorities in Hamilton, Halton and the Niagara Peninsula have all issued flood watches as “watershed are expected to increase significantly,” according to the Hamilton Conservation Authority.

The Grand River Conservation Authority issued a warning for Six Nations.

“River flows are high and are expected to increase in the lower Grand River throughout Tuesday, March 10, and will result in flooding of low-lying areas,” the warning reads.

Brant County, Brantford and Haldimand County are under a flood watch, it said.

In Hamilton, Tuesday will see a high of 14 C and a low of 2 C overnight with risk of thunderstorm.

Wednesday will see a steady 5 C temperature and a low of –3 C.
