Hello. My name is Gregg, and I live in Southern New Jersey. I would love to share the story of my dog Sammy, who has become an inspiration to so many people.

Sammy is a special needs dog — a dachshund and chihuahua mix, often called a Chiweenie. Today he is 12 years old, but when he was just three years old he suffered a terrible accident that changed his life forever. Sammy ruptured a disc in his spine and was left paralyzed for several weeks. The injury may have been caused by intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) or possibly by hitting a divot in the lawn made by another animal.

Despite extensive treatment and more than $60,000 spent on medical care, Sammy never fully regained the ability to walk normally. Around the house and in the backyard he struggles with mobility, and when we go off the property he uses a wheelchair to help him get around.

Because of the nerve damage caused by his injury, Sammy also cannot defecate or urinate on his own and requires daily assistance. At one point he even needed a rare genital modification surgery that ultimately saved his life. While this type of procedure is common in cats, it is very unusual in dogs.

Over the course of his life, Sammy has undergone four major surgeries. Despite everything he has endured, he lives with incredible energy and enthusiasm.

Whenever Sammy goes out in public, he becomes a celebrity. Hundreds of people stop to take photos, pet him, and ask about his story. Many people thank me for caring for him and giving him the life he deserves.

A few years ago, Sammy even inspired a special needs dog design featured on shirts sold by Freedom Park at their off-leash dog area.

More recently, in 2025, Sammy won six consecutive Halloween pet costume contests, earning either Best Overall or First Place each time.

Before his accident, I was actually training Sammy to become a therapy dog. Unfortunately, his injury forced me to stop that training. Still, Sammy continues to bring joy and comfort to people everywhere he goes.

Sammy absolutely loves children and thrives on attention. He is a shining example of determination, courage, strength, and positivity. The most amazing thing is that Sammy doesn’t see himself as disabled at all. He simply lives life at full speed — and his one speed is fast.

Over the years he has melted hearts and inspired everyone he encounters.

Sammy has even participated in community outreach. About a year ago he attended an event at a local Boys and Girls Club. He is also an honorary member of the Miracle League of Mercer County, New Jersey, and can visit the league whenever he likes.

In May, Sammy will also be attending a Special Olympics New Jersey event.

Although many people encounter animals every day, special needs pets like Sammy are much rarer to see. His story is unique and powerful, showing just how resilient animals can be.

Sammy continues to live a happy, healthy life filled with excitement, love, and adventure — inspiring everyone who has the chance to meet him.
