Top Indians expected for Para Athletics Grand Prix

Some of the top names in India para athletics are expected to be in action as the second edition of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix begins here on Tuesday.

The three-day event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is the second leg of the eight-city Grand Prix series and will see more than 250 athletes from eight countries in action including Russia, Nepal, Bhutan and Egypt among others. The foreign participation, however, is expected to be fairly minimal with the host fielding almost 200 athletes.

Among those expected to participate are Paralympic gold medallist high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu, Paralympic champion and world record holder javelin thrower Sumit Antil and Paris Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar. On the track, Asian Games medallist Ankur Dhama and sprinters Simran Sharma and Preeti Pal will be favourites.

At the season-opening Grand Prix in Dubai last month, India topped the medal tally with 43 including 16 golds, led by Antil, Navdeep Singh, Preeti and veteran Dharambir Nain.

The inaugural edition last year saw India finish on top of the table with 134 medals including 45 gold and Paralympic Committee of India president Devendra Jhajharia is hoping to touch 50 golds this time around.
