A flood warning has been issued for New Hamburg, Ayr and West Montrose.
Saturday saw rain and mild temperatures, which led to melting snow. Those combined to raise water levels in local rivers.
The Grand River Conservation Authority issued the flood warning Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The rest of the Grand River watershed, which goes north to Dundalk, south to Lake Erie and includes all of Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County, remains under a flood watch.
“Air temperatures are expected to remain above freezing until Wednesday,” the flood warning noted.
The watershed saw between 15 and 30 mm of rain between Friday and Saturday afternoon.
“The snowpack in the northern part of the watershed contains a significant amount of water content. Warm temperatures combined with rain, which may be heavy at times, is resulting in snowmelt and increased runoff,” the flood warning said.
Ayr, New Hamburg and West Montrose are currently in a level one flood risk. New Hamburg and Ayr could move into a level two flood risk on Sunday, the conservation authority said.
Ice remains on several rivers, including the Grand River, which could lead to ice jams.
“High flows and unstable ice conditions will increase the safety risk around rivers and streams throughout the watershed. The public is encouraged to exercise extreme caution around local waterways,” the authority said.
Wilmot Township also issued the flood warning to residents in New Hamburg, advising people to keep an eye on conditions as the weekend progresses.
Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County were under a yellow weather warning for rain from Environment Canada for much of Saturday.
Rain and possible thunderstorms were in the forecast for Saturday night, with snow and freezing drizzle possible in the early morning hours on Sunday.
