It’s a weekend of weather warnings right across B.C.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a variety of wind and rainfall alerts.
In both the north and south Peace River region, strong winds are expected Saturday and Sunday. Gusts have blown close to 90 kilometres per hour, and later on may strengthen to up to 100 km/h.
“Communities south of Dawson Creek may experience gusts exceeding 100 km/h.”
The winds are expected to ease on Sunday morning, but utility outages are possible, according to Environment Canada.
Wind warnings have also been issued for the Chilcotin region, near Anahim Lake and Nimpo Lake, and up into northern B.C., including Prince George.
“These strong winds will persist overnight and ease throughout the day on Sunday.”
The Fraser Canyon will also see strong winds up to 80 km/h on Saturday and ease Sunday morning.
Gusty winds and possible outages are probable in the southern Interior from Saturday evening to Sunday, according to a special weather statement.
“Local utility outages are possible. High-sided vehicles will be pushed around by the wind. Secure lose objects,” said Environment Canada.
Meanwhile, a rainfall warning is in effect for the central coast, including heavy rain and strong winds.
Brian Proctor, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said a high pressure system is coming up and impacting the B.C. coast.
“We’re likely to see significant amounts of rain in the Vancouver area,” he said, but added it’s nothing locals aren’t used to at this time of year.
Proctor said next weekend could look much stormier as there is a chance of an atmospheric river, but that will depend on where the system comes on shore.
